Chapter 37

Ava POV

Something wasn't right. The forest had gone completely silent.

No birds. No insects. Even the wind seemed to have stopped.

I slowed my horse, scanning the trees around me. The warriors riding behind me noticed the change immediately.

"Luna?" one of them asked.

I raised my hand, signaling everyone to stop. "Stay alert."

The uneasy feeling in my chest kept growing. It felt like someone was watching us. Not one person… Several. I closed my eyes for a brief second, reaching out with the strange power that had been growing inside me since I met the white-haired woman in my dreams.

At first...Nothing. Then a flash. Dark figures moving through the trees. Red eyes. Vampires. My eyes flew open.

"Ambush!" I shouted. "Form a circle!"

The warriors reacted instantly, surrounding me with drawn swords just as the first vampire leapt from the trees. Steel clashed. Growls echoed through the forest.

Within seconds, the peaceful patrol had become a battlefield.

A vampire lunged straight for me, but I ducked beneath its claws and drove my blade into its stomach. It hissed and stumbled backward.

Another attacked from behind. Before it could reach me, one of Grill's warriors intercepted it, tackling the vampire into a tree.

More shadows poured from the forest. There were too many.

"They're trying to separate the Luna!" one warrior yelled.

I suddenly realized something. They weren't trying to kill everyone.

They were trying to take me.

Hesu POV

Everything was happening exactly as planned. Tony was busy with Catherine. Grill had been delayed questioning the rogues.

Now Ava stood exactly where I wanted her. I watched from the treetops, hidden among the branches.

"Do not kill her," I ordered quietly. "Our mistress wants her alive."

The vampires nodded. One by one, they closed in. Ava fought surprisingly well. Better than I expected. Every movement was fast and precise. Then… A faint silver light began to glow around her hands.

I narrowed my eyes. "So... your powers are finally awakening."

Interesting. Very interesting.

Grill POV

I ran harder than I ever had before. Tony raced beside me in wolf form. Ahead, I could already hear the sounds of battle. The clash of steel. The screams. Then...A powerful burst of energy exploded through the forest.

The ground shook beneath our paws. Trees bent as a wave of silver light shot into the sky. Tony and I shifted back into our human forms just as we reached the clearing. The sight before us stopped us cold. Ava stood in the center of the battlefield. Silver energy surrounded her body like living flames. Every vampire nearby had been thrown backward. Some lay motionless. Others scrambled to their feet in fear. Even Hesu stared at Ava with wide eyes.

"No..." Hesu whispered. "It can't be..."

Ava slowly lifted her head. Her glowing silver eyes locked onto Hesu. In a calm but powerful voice, she spoke words that seemed to echo through the entire forest.

"You should have stayed away."

The air cracked with power. Hesu took an involuntary step backward. For the first time… The vampire mistress looked afraid.
