Chapter 26
Catherine POV
I hadn't just relaxed, I had completely fallen asleep. I didn't even realize we were home until I slowly opened my eyes.
What was in that drink?
Sitting up in bed, I looked around the unfamiliar room. Two narrow windows high on the wall let streams of sunlight pour inside.
This wasn't our bedroom. Where was I?
I swung my legs over the side of the bed, ready to stand, when something cold wrapped around my ankle caught my attention.
A cuff.
"What the hell..."
I grabbed it, expecting to snap it in half, but before I could, I noticed it wasn't chained to anything. It was simply locked around my ankle.
What is this man doing? I'm not wearing this thing forever.
Ignoring it for the moment, I walked toward the door. The second I opened it, a guard stepped in front of me.
"I'm sorry, Luna, but Alpha Tony ordered me to keep you here until he returns from his meeting. Then the two of you can talk."
Was this guy serious? I wasn't some prisoner. I shoved past him.
"I'm hungry."
"Luna, please. You have to do what Alpha Tony says."
I stopped and slowly turned around. "I don't have to do a damn thing," he tells me. I'm the Luna of this pack, and I'll do whatever I please. Right now, what I please is getting something to eat. Now move."
I pushed past him again and headed straight for the kitchen.
The staff immediately stepped aside as I walked in. I grabbed a pan, cooked a few eggs, toasted some bread, and made myself a large egg sandwich before heading back toward my room. As I passed the guard, I pointed a finger at him.
"Don't ever tell me what to do again. I'm not in jail."
I slammed the bedroom door in his face. Dropping onto the bed, I mind-linked Tony.
"First, never try locking me in a room again. Second, what was in that drink you gave me on the plane? Third, we need to talk. I don't like playing games, Tony."
I cut the link before he could answer. Only seconds later, his voice entered my mind.
"First, know your place, Catherine. Second, we'll talk when I get home. Be ready to go out. I'm guessing you ignored the guard and walked right out after breaking the rules. Yes, I already know about it. There are new rules now, Catherine, so don't push me. Be ready before I get home." The link disappeared before I could respond.
How dare he. Know my place? Who did he think he was? He was ordering me around like I was one of his warriors. I let out an irritated sigh and flopped back onto the bed. I had no idea when he'd actually be home. I supposed the guard would let me know.
Tony POV
I was sitting in a meeting with my banker when Catherine mind-linked me. She was furious. Honestly, I expected that.
But I didn't have time to argue with her while discussing business.
Before she could continue, I ended the mind-link. I'd already made my decision.
The meeting wrapped up shortly afterward. The banker handed me a brand-new bank card that I'd arranged in Catherine's name. We shook hands before I left. There was one more stop to make.
Actually... two. First, I went to a jewelry store. No matter how angry she was, Catherine had always loved beautiful jewelry. After looking through several display cases, I found a necklace that reminded me of her and bought it.
From there, I visited another store to pick out a gift for my son.
Only after everything was finished did I climb back into my SUV.
On the drive home, I mind-linked Catherine.
"I'm on my way home. Be ready when I get there. We're going out."
Before she could answer, I cut the link.
If I gave her time to argue, she'd spend the entire drive fighting with me through the bond. Part of me had already wondered if I should simply tell her to leave. But I wasn't ready to give up yet. I was only a few minutes from the packhouse when one of the guards mind-linked me.
"Boss, she's getting ready. She found the dress you bought her. She's wearing it."
A small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.. Good. At least she liked the dress.
"Good. That's exactly what I wanted her to wear. I'm almost there. Have her waiting at the front entrance in five minutes."
"Yes, Boss."
Ending the link, I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. Tonight could change everything. I just hoped it would end better than it began.
