Lira found him at dusk. She had spent the hours after leaving the archive in a state of controlled fury that she disguised as routine. She returned the ventilation grate to its position, replaced the screws with steady fingers that wanted to shake, climbed down from the chair, and pushed it back to its place at the table. She walked out of the general records hall and past Tessa at the corridor junction and said two words, “Got it.” Tessa had opened her mouth to ask the seventeen questions that were visibly forming behind her eyes and Lira had shaken her head once and kept walking.
