Chapter 6: The Bond’s Cruel Pull

1001 Words
Dahlia's POV Sunlight filtered through the curtains, spilling across the floor. Birds chirped outside, leaves rustling in the gentle morning breeze. I stretched, every muscle protesting as I swung my legs off the bed, my body still aching from my injuries, my mind replaying yesterday’s events. The spark, the brief, shocking connection when my hand brushed his, and the way he had walked out of the hall so suddenly… it made my chest tighten again. “I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me,” I unconsciously said out loud. Dragging my feet, I padded to the bathroom. Warm water ran over my skin, washing away the remnants of sleep, but not the memory of him. I was halfway through dressing when a sharp knock at the door made me startle. Knock. Knock. “Coming,” I yelled as I made my way to the door. “Hi, good morning,” I greeted the maid who was at the door, her arms crossed. She lifted her chin, eyes rolling. “Hurry up. Your attention is needed at the training yard,” she said, then left without another word. I let out an exasperated sigh. This isn't something I was new to. Every single member of the pack hated me. I stepped outside, the cold wind tugging at my hair. It bit at my cheeks, but it was nothing compared to the pull in my chest. It was sharp, and insistent as it thrummed beneath my skin. It must be the mate bond. I shook my head, forcing my shoulders back. I would avoid him. I had to. He would never accept me as his mate. Yesterday’s feast had made that clear. A voice cut through the wind, low and commanding. “What are you doing standing there?” My stomach dropped. I spun around, and there he was—Alpha Asher. The gray morning seemed to darken around him. I froze, my heart hammering in my chest. The wind tugged at my hair again, but this time it felt like it carried his presence straight into my bones. “Alpha… Alpha Asher,” I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. My fingers itched to adjust my sleeves, to do anything, anything that would give me an excuse to move, to escape. He took a slow step toward me. Each movement was deliberate, confident, and I felt the bond tighten, pulling me toward him despite my will. My knees trembled, and I planted them firmly to stay upright. “Stand still,” he said, his eyes scanning me from head to toe. There was no warmth in them, no smile, only that calm, unyielding intensity that made my chest ache. Before I could find my voice, a sharp laugh cut across the yard. “Well, well, well, look who’s frozen like a little mouse.” I didn't need to.turn around to know who was talking. Katherine’s voice rang out, dripping with malice. She sauntered closer, eyes glittering with cruel amusement. “I almost didn’t recognize you without tripping over yourself.” My cheeks flamed. I opened my mouth, but no words came. My fists clenched, then relaxed, then clenched again. The bond throbbed like a drumbeat in my veins, warning me, urging me, making every movement feel impossible to control. Katherine circled me like a predator. “Do you even know why you’re here?” she sneered. “Or are you just… lucky he hasn’t noticed how useless you are yet?” Asher’s gaze stayed on me, steady, and unblinking. I felt the world narrow to the line between us. The pull of the bond grew stronger, making my head spin. Every instinct screamed to run, to hide, but my body refused to obey. “You will spar today,” he said finally, his voice calm but edged with authority. “Show me what you’re worth.” Katherine’s smirk widened, and she stepped back, arms crossed, clearly enjoying the tension. I swallowed hard, feeling the blood rush to my face. My stomach twisted, my muscles quivering. The bond pulsed again, insistent, relentless. I took a shaky step forward, unable to resist, unable to stop myself from moving closer to him. And deep down, I knew: there was no escaping what was coming next. The wind tugged at my hair as I stepped onto the training ground, cold biting at my skin. My hands trembled, my chest tight, and the bond pulsed through me, pulling me closer to him despite my will. He stood there, calm and unyielding, as his eyes fixed on me. My stomach twisted, every instinct screaming to run, but my legs moved forward anyway. “Begin,” he said, his voice low and steady. I swung my fists, fast and desperate. He sidestepped with ease, his gaze never leaving mine. Each miss made my frustration spike, each step toward him felt like surrender I wasn’t ready to give. Katherine’s laughter rang sharp from the sidelines. “Pathetic. Is that all you’ve got?” I lunged again, harder this time, but my movements felt clumsy, heavy, and slow. Pain flared across my side as he blocked my strike, and I stumbled back, hitting the ground with a harsh thud. Blood ran warm along my side. My hands shook, my vision blurred, and every muscle screamed at me to stop. The bond throbbed, demanding I keep going—but I couldn’t. I tried to push myself up, I tried to raise my fists, but my body refused. My breaths came in sharp gasps, each one trembling with exhaustion and fear. Asher’s eyes stayed locked on me, unflinching, calm, and terrifying. Katherine’s laughter drifted across the yard, sharp and cruel, but all I could feel was the pull of the bond and the ache of my own weakness. I was bleeding. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t defend myself. And there, in the gray morning light, the world narrowed to one truth: I was completely exposed, helpless under the Alpha’s resentful watchful gaze.
