Chapter5

Aurora The cold metal of the gun pressed against Cassian’s temple made my heart seize. Every breath I took was shallow, caught between the sharp scent of smoke and the acrid tang of fear. The rooftop was no longer a place of escape—it was a cage, and the air was thick with danger. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the shadowed figure standing just a few feet away, gun steady, his voice a whisper that cut through the silence like a razor. “Game’s over, Rhys.” Cassian didn’t flinch. His jaw clenched hard, muscles tightening like a spring about to snap. The man’s steps echoed as he closed the distance, the gun unwavering, his presence chilling in the moonlight. I swallowed hard, fighting the sudden panic rising inside me, and glanced at Cassian. His eyes met mine for the briefest moment, a silent vow: survive this. Fight with me. Then, in a move too fast for me to process, Cassian lunged. The gunshot shattered the night. A searing, burning pain tore through my side. I staggered, my hands flying to the wound even as my breath hitched in a strangled gasp. Warmth spread rapidly, sticky and real. Cassian’s form blurred through my haze as chaos exploded around us. The shadowed man disappeared into the smoke, vanishing like a ghost—but the threat lingered, suffocating and close. The private jet’s engines thundered to life. The roar was deafening, but the urgency was undeniable. The world tilted beneath me as the aircraft began its desperate climb, shoving us away from immediate danger—but nowhere near safety. Cassian sank beside me, eyes blazing with a mix of pain and raw fury. He was breathing hard, the weight of the moment crushing down on him. “We’re not safe,” he growled, voice low and harsh. “They want this contract. They want us to break.” My head spun, the pain in my side burning with every heartbeat, but I forced myself to focus, to stay present. “We have to fight back,” I whispered, my voice trembling despite my determination. “We can’t just run.” Cassian’s hand moved quickly, pulling a small device from his pocket—a sleek, black rectangular thing I recognized from his company’s security protocols. He tapped it with urgency. “I’ve already started,” he said grimly. “This goes deeper than you think. This contract, this arrangement... it’s just the surface. They want more.” I wanted to demand answers, to scream for truth. But the world was slipping away as pain and exhaustion crashed over me like a wave. When I finally came to, the jet was quiet—too quiet. The hum of the engines was a dull murmur, and outside the window, the city lights twinkled far below us. Cassian sat across from me, his expression unreadable as he watched me carefully. His eyes, sharp and intense, never left my face. “We’re heading somewhere safe,” he said quietly. “Somewhere no one knows about. But this—what’s happening—it’s only the beginning.” I tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness knocked me back. My body throbbed, every breath a reminder of how close I’d come to disaster. “Tell me,” I said, my voice barely more than a whisper. “Tell me what’s going on.” Cassian hesitated, then reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope sealed with crimson wax—the emblem I recognized from his family crest. He broke the seal and unfolded the letter carefully. My eyes widened as he read aloud, voice steady but laced with something dark. “You’re marked, Aurora. And time is running out.” The words sank into me like poison. “What does it mean?” I whispered, dread pooling in my stomach. Cassian’s jaw tightened. “They don’t just want to ruin us. They want to control us. And if we don’t play by their rules, they’ll destroy everything we care about.” I wanted to argue, to say we could fight, that I wasn’t some pawn in their game—but deep down, I knew he was right. The silence stretched between us, heavy with unsaid fears and mounting tension. My mind raced, trying to piece together the fragments of this nightmare that was becoming my life. Suddenly, the door slid open, and one of Cassian’s most trusted men stepped in, his face grim. “We’ve been tracking the source,” he said. “They’re closer than we thought. We don’t have much time.” Cassian’s eyes darkened with fury. “Prepare for extraction the moment we land. We move fast, and we move hard.” I reached out, grasping his arm. “What if they come after me? What if this isn’t just about you?” He looked down at my hand, then back up with a fierce intensity. “It is about both of us now. And I swear, I’ll protect you—even if it kills me.” The jet shuddered as it began its descent. I gripped the armrest, the weight of what lay ahead crashing down. As the city skyline grew larger outside the window, the envelope slipped from Cassian’s trembling hands, fluttering to the floor. I bent down to pick it up, eyes locking on the final chilling sentence scrawled inside: “They’re watching. They know where you sleep.” The air around us felt colder suddenly, the shadows longer. And I realized: this wasn’t just a contract, a game, or a war. It was a countdown to destruction. And we had no idea how much time we really had left. The jet’s landing gear hit the runway with a harsh screech, but before we could even breathe, the emergency alarms blared—signaling an intruder on board. The door slid open, and standing there, bathed in cold blue light, was someone I never expected to see. Someone who would change everything.
