Chapter6

Aurora The sudden bang on the cabin door jolted me from the fragile calm that had settled between us. Cassian’s grip tightened around my hand, his eyes darkening like storm clouds ready to burst. “Stay behind me,” he warned, voice low but fierce. The door crashed open and a man lunged inside—face masked, movements quick and ruthless. But Cassian was faster. One brutal strike, and the intruder collapsed silently onto the floor. No theatrics, no drawn-out fight—just brutal efficiency. My heart hammered, adrenaline flooding through my veins, but the fear that had shadowed us moments ago dissolved beneath something heavier—something charged between us. Cassian turned to me, his expression unreadable for a heartbeat, then softened. “You’re safe now.” Safe. The word felt strange in my mouth when my pulse was still racing and the weight of everything pressing down on me was almost suffocating. But his presence grounded me in a way no one else ever had. We sank into the worn leather seats opposite each other, the tension between us crackling like a live wire. “I can’t pretend this contract isn’t a trap,” I admitted, biting my lip. “But maybe it’s the only way we both survive.” He leaned forward, eyes blazing. “It’s more than survival for me, Aurora. I want... something real. Even if this started as a deal.” The raw vulnerability in his voice caught me off guard. The guarded man I'd met before was peeling away, revealing cracks I hadn’t expected. I met his gaze, my voice barely a whisper. “Then show me. Because I’m scared. Scared of what this means, of what I want.” His fingers brushed mine, lingering longer than necessary. Heat flared beneath my skin, igniting a desire I had no business feeling but couldn’t resist. “Maybe fear is part of it,” he murmured, “but so is the fire.” The jet dipped suddenly, and I instinctively reached for him. Our hands intertwined, the first spark of something dangerous and irresistible sparking between us. I could feel it in my bones—this was just the beginning. The battle outside might rage, but the real war was happening right here, between us, in stolen touches and lingering looks. And I knew—when we landed, nothing would ever be the same. Just as I thought I might let myself believe in us, the encrypted message on Cassian’s phone lit up. The words froze me in place: “We have her. One mistake and she dies.”
