ODDS ARE GOOD

CHAPTER 8

I was rolling under the sheets because of my insomnia. I tried and tried to sleep but it was hard. My eyes were sore but my mind kept on running. I popped up my phone under the blanket. It was 1 am, midnight.

“Owh”

I groaned.

Usually, I’d sleep quite soon but it was not that turn. I was watching photos in my phone that I took with my mom, her friends and Anakin. 

I chuckled when a photo popped in with a funny face of Anakin.

I turned off my phone and started blinking. I heard someone singing, outside my door. It was so sweet and it was a lullaby. It sounded like a little girl. 

“Mommy?” I asked in a low voice but loud enough to the door.

It paused for a moment and then started singing again. I looked under the door gap from my bed. I saw a shadow and the bulb outside was glowing as always. It was a shadow of someone’s leg.

“Is anyone out there?”

Little poppins are so tired

Feed them and get fired

Lily Lily you like Millie?

Look out there someone’s killing

 It sung like that. “She” sung like that. The voice seemed pretty sweet but the words weren’t. I took off my blanket and slowly kept my feet on the floor, very slowly without making a noise.

I saw the silhouette moving to the left direction towards the bathroom. I was strolling still. I opened the door slowly without a creak.

I came out of the room and stood on the room way. I looked at both the direction but, there was no one.

I looked on the floor and there were trails of blood towards the bathroom. I clasped my hand towards my mouth and started following it. I made sure that I’m not collapsing the trail of blood. I reached the bathroom. I opened it slowly and I heard someone cry. I also heard the tap flowing in the tub.

“Mom?”

There was no reply but silence.

“Is someone here?”

“Hmm?”

I turned on the light.

“What!”

The trail continued to the tub and the tub was filled with blood. I went near the tub and rechecked if it was a real blood. I let my fingers run through the blood in the tub.

“s**t!”

A hand caught me up my hand. I screamed and forced my hand to leave it. I ran up to my mom’s bedroom. I banged on her door.

“Mommy!!”

“You need to come out and see this!”

“Moooommm!!!”

She slammed the door open.

“Charley!”

“What’s wrong with you?”

I panicked. I grabbed her hand and climbed upstairs to my room.

“What are you doing at 2am without sleeping Charley?”

I showed her the way.

But, there were no such blood trails. The bathroom door was opened with lights on.

“Mom!”

“You need to believe this, I saw a silhouette of someone singing and when I came out I saw blood trails!”

My mom deeply sighed.

“It’s just the medications, Charley”

I hit my head with my hands. I grabbed her hand again and went in the bathroom further more. There were fillings in the tub, but with water.

“What the s**t?”

“Mom, the tub was filled with blood!”

“I saw it with my eyes!”

“And even a hand grabbed me down from this b****y tub!”

She looked over me and back again to the water tub.

“It’s you who is grabbing my hand now”

I released her quickly.

“Baby, I know it’s hard to live without your dad”

“But, we can overcome this too”

“And I know how hard life is on you”

“It’s just overdose and drugs”

“Just be calm”

She patted my head and kissed me. I believed her words because I believe her.

Maybe it was just the medications or like a nightmare, I have to assume. She turned off the light and nudged me to my bedroom.

“Good sleep, dear”

“I love you”

I smiled.

“Love you too, mom”

She went downstairs yawning. I closed the door and fell asleep on my bed.

 I woke up to the sunlight on my face.

“Who left the curtains open?” I muttered.

I stretched out my body like a cat. I looked at the clock. It said 10am. Well, it was a weekend anyway.

I gave a big yawn and some warm up with the sunlight. I made up my bed neatly and went in the bathroom to brush my teeth.

I looked at the tub in my bathroom and it reminded me. I shook off my thoughts and started brushing my teeth.

I ran downstairs as I was quite hungry.

“Hey Mumma!”

She gave a lightly smile, light enough to lit up the day.

“Good morning, sweetheart!”

I chuckled. I took some cereals from the kitchen cupboard along with the bowl. I poured some milk and I mixed it with my cereal.

“Don’t you have work today mom?”

She nodded no and smiled brightly.

“They gave two days off for weekend”

I scoffed at her.

“I made a plan too, babe”

I frowned.

“What?”

“What plan?”

She chuckled and kept the cereal box back in the cupboard.

“A surprise!”

I scoffed again.

“Mom!”

“Common!”

“Where are we going?”

She nodded.

“I’ll take you”

“Just finish your brekky and get ready!” she winked.

I nodded and smiled. I sat on the couch and turned on the TV. I started slurping on the cereals and milk.

I finished it and turned off the TV. I washed the dishes and ran up to my room. I turned on the geyser and kept all my essentials including the medicines.

I took a steam bath which was satisfying. I applied my ointment. And then, I shoved in a jean and a baggy t-shirt.

I took my phone and climbed down.

“Mom, I’m ready”

She shouted from her bedroom.

“Take your supplements first!”

“Oops, I forgot!” I muttered.

I looked out for the supplements. It was on the dining table. I gulped it down with some water and waited for my mom.

She locked the door and we got in the driveway with her car.

I was pretty excited.
