A Quiet Invitation

1150 Words
The tattoo was finished. Asher looked down at her forearm, where the ink had settled into her skin—a delicate black cat, its eyes wide and mysterious, accompanied by the number 13 in flowing script, a simple design, but one that felt somehow more significant than she’d expected. Luna had taken her time, carefully inking every line, each stroke with a sense of purpose. There was something deeply intimate about the way she had worked, and Asher couldn’t help but admire the finished product, even though it was far simpler than the intricate, sprawling designs that usually covered her body. Luna stepped back and surveyed her work, her eyes scanning Asher’s arm with a focused intensity. Asher felt a strange warmth in her chest as Luna's gaze lingered just a bit too long, her dark eyes never leaving her skin. There was a kind of magnetism between them that made the room feel a little smaller, a little warmer. “Looks good,” Luna said, her voice soft but filled with a quiet satisfaction. “I’m glad you let me take my time with it.” Asher smiled, admiring the tattoo one last time before looking up at Luna. “It’s perfect,” she said, the words coming out more sincere than she intended. “Thanks, Luna. Really.” Luna’s lips curved into a subtle, almost shy smile. There was a flicker of something in her eyes—something Asher couldn’t quite place. “You’re welcome,” Luna said, her tone softer now. “I’m glad you like it.” As she began to wipe the excess ink from Asher’s skin, Luna hesitated for a moment, her fingers brushing lightly against the curve of Asher’s wrist. It was a fleeting touch, but it sent another jolt of warmth through Asher’s body. Luna met her gaze again, her cheeks flushing just the slightest bit. Asher couldn’t help but notice the change in her—Luna’s usual cool confidence was tinged with something else now, something more personal, more vulnerable. She liked it. She liked it a lot. Luna stepped back and reached for a flyer from the counter, her fingers lingering on it as she handed it to Asher. “There’s a show coming up at The Bonham,” she said, her voice steady but there was a soft blush creeping onto her cheeks. “It’s an alternative venue, so you might be into it. Lots of different kinds of people show up—lots of energy, you know? Thought you might be interested.” Asher looked at the flyer, noting the bold text announcing the show—a punk band, indie music, a celebration of alternative lifestyles. The Bonham was known for being a place that welcomed everyone—no judgments, no expectations. Asher had been there before, back when she was younger, when the world still felt a little more wild and free. She glanced up at Luna, unable to resist a playful grin. “Oh, I’m familiar with The Bonham,” she said, her voice teasing. “Used to hang out there a lot back in my… younger days.” Luna’s eyes widened, and for a second, it looked like she was holding her breath. The blush on her cheeks deepened, and she quickly looked away, almost as if she were embarrassed by the idea of Asher knowing more about the place. But when she met Asher’s eyes again, there was a subtle spark of curiosity, of something deeper. “Well,” Luna began, a small but sly smile tugging at her lips, “maybe you’ll come by again. It’s the kind of place where anything can happen.” She paused, her gaze softening. “I’ll be there, if you do.” Asher raised an eyebrow, the tension between them palpable now. “Sounds like an invitation,” she said, her voice low, teasing. Luna’s smile faltered for just a moment, and then she laughed, the sound light and unguarded. “Maybe it is,” she said, looking away, but there was something in the way she said it—something that made Asher wonder if there was more to Luna’s invitation than just the show. Asher stood up from the chair, pulling on her jacket and smoothing the fabric down over her shoulders. The moment was hanging in the air between them, suspended like a delicate thread. Asher didn’t want to leave yet—not when things felt so charged, so unfinished—but she also knew she had to. She had her work to do. And Luna had her own life, her own space. “Well,” Asher said, her voice more casual than she felt, “maybe I’ll stop by. It’s been a while since I’ve had a night out. And I can’t resist a good show.” Luna nodded, her fingers still lightly holding the flyer, her eyes following Asher as she moved toward the door. “You should,” she said, her voice quieter now, almost hesitant. “It’s a good crowd. You might meet some interesting people.” Asher paused at the door, turning back to Luna with a wink. “Maybe I’ll meet someone interesting,” she said with a grin. “I’ll see you there, Luna.” Luna’s eyes widened slightly, and she opened her mouth to respond, but the words seemed to catch in her throat. She just nodded, her gaze never leaving Asher. “I’ll be there,” she said again, her voice barely above a whisper. Asher pushed the door open and stepped outside, the cool San Antonio air hitting her skin. She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the interaction hanging in her chest. She wasn’t sure what had just happened between them—what exactly it was that had sparked so quickly, so unexpectedly—but she knew she couldn’t ignore it. She glanced back at the shop, seeing Luna through the window, her dark eyes still watching her. For a moment, it felt like the entire world had paused, like everything was waiting for the next move, the next moment to unfold. As Asher turned to walk down the street, her mind was racing. There was something about Luna—something that pulled her in, something that made her want to know more. She was drawn to the mystery, to the quiet intensity that Luna wore like a second skin. And maybe, just maybe, The Bonham would be the place where everything changed. But as much as she liked the idea of seeing Luna again, she wasn’t ready to dive in too fast. The roads Asher had traveled were full of unpredictability, and she wasn’t about to let herself get swept up in something she couldn’t control. Yet, a small part of her hoped Luna would be there. And if she was, well… Asher was pretty damn good at taking chances.
