Chapter 15

1060 Words
Morning came too soon. Wyatt’s dull alarm startled me awake at exactly 6 a.m. I’d agreed to shadow him for the day while he completed his Alpha duties. He insisted I didn’t need to—told me I should rest—but I reminded him that as his future Luna, it was important I understood the workings of our pack. I didn’t want to be the kind of Luna who only shopped and showed up for ceremonies. I wanted to help—to be his partner, someone he could rely on. I quickly brushed my hair and tied it into a ponytail. I hadn’t unpacked my trunk yet or gone shopping for more clothes, so I grabbed the first thing I saw: a pair of black jeans. Wyatt beamed at me, clearly just happy I was spending the day with him. But I set my mind to business, determined not to act like some dumbstruck girl trailing after her mate. As we walked down the hallway from our bedroom, I noticed a series of portraits lining the wall—men and women, stern and powerful, most of them with sharp expressions. Former Alphas and Lunas of High Moon, I assumed. But at the end of the row, one painting stood out. A beautiful, black-haired woman smiled softly, radiating warmth. Her mate stood behind her, a hand resting protectively on her shoulder. The Alpha had a strong jawline and reddish-brown hair—a spitting image of Wyatt. They looked so happy, so in love. I paused, captivated. Wyatt stopped beside me, staring up at the portrait in silence. “These are your parents?” I asked softly. He nodded without a word. I didn’t know the full story of his relationship with them, but the love between them was evident—even in paint. It made me wonder how someone raised by warmth like that could have a brother as cold as Everett. “May the Moon Goddess bless them in the afterlife,” I whispered, bowing respectfully. Wyatt turned to me, his expression full of something unspoken. Then, without warning, he swept me into a bear hug. “Thank you,” he murmured into my hair. “You have no idea how much that means to me.” I pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, then slipped my fingers into his. “Let’s go. You’ve got work to do, Alpha.” The morning passed in a blur of meetings. I sat beside Wyatt while he listened to reports: the rogue status in the area, construction progress, internal complaints, and worst of all—border concerns involving Emerald Moon. The hardest part of it all wasn’t the information overload. It was keeping my composure while watching Wyatt work. His voice commanded the room. His posture was confident, his energy steady and authoritative. And the way his biceps flexed as he gestured toward charts? It was pure torment. Focus, Ginger. “Sir, while you were gone, we spotted several Emerald patrols near Weeping Falls,” said Reginald, a tall warrior with a buzzcut and a commanding presence. “It seems like they’re trying to include that area in their regular rounds.” Wyatt raised an eyebrow, clearly displeased. “I’ll go myself this afternoon with a patrol. We’ll scour the entire area. That land is ours, and I’ve given no one permission to cross into it.” I hesitated, then spoke up. “Sorry to interrupt… but Emerald Moon— that’s Everett’s pack, right?” Both Reginald and Wyatt nodded. “Yes, Luna,” Reginald said. “After Alpha Wyatt and Alpha Everett split the pack land, we took the flatter side—good for crops and livestock. Emerald Moon took more of the forest. We also divided business assets between the packs. Their representatives can sometimes be… difficult.” There was strain in his voice. I could tell there was more he wanted to say, but he held it back. I nodded slowly, taking it in. There was so much I didn’t know, so much I still had to learn if I wanted to be a Luna truly worthy of the title. Wyatt gave me a soft, reassuring smile. “It’s a lot, I know. But you don’t have to learn it all in one day.” Then, turning back to Reginald: “Thank you. That’ll be all for now.” Reginald bowed and left the room. My head swirled from the sheer weight of everything. Wyatt reached over, pulled my chair closer, then lifted me gently into his lap. His nose nestled into the crook of my neck as he inhaled deeply. After last night, I felt impossibly closer to him. His scent wrapped around me—earthy, grounding, safe. It dulled my anxiety and calmed the rising insecurity inside me. “I’m going to patrol the Falls this afternoon,” he said. “But we can’t rule out that it’s a trap. I don’t know why my brother took you or what he’s planning… but I can’t trust him anymore.” My heart ached at the mention of Everett, but Wyatt’s steady voice kept me grounded. “While I’m gone, I’m sending you out with Trixie,” he added. “You need new clothes.” I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off. “And I don’t want to hear any arguments.” He pulled out his wallet, slipping a sleek black card into my hand. “Use this. Get everything you want.” I wanted to argue. I really did. But he looked so handsome sitting there—his jaw clenched, his eyes intense. Resistance melted away. We need to look the part of Luna, Amethyst chimed in my head. Yes, I know, I replied sarcastically. Don’t forget I can hear you now, mate. Wyatt’s deep voice rumbled through my mind, smug and amused. My face flushed crimson. I had completely forgotten that our bond was open now. Also, he added, I appreciate how handsome you think I am… and all those dirty thoughts you had during the meeting? I heard them. All of them. My mouth dropped open. My cheeks practically caught fire. Right as I was about to combust from embarrassment and desire, the door burst open. “Break it up, lovebirds!” Trixie grinned. “I’m ready to go shopping!”
