Echoes of Power

Chapter 10: Echoes of Power The jet roared across the night sky, slicing through clouds like a blade. Elena sat rigid, her eyes on the flash drive clutched in her lap. That tiny piece of metal held more weight than any diamond, more power than a throne. It was the kind of truth that could remake—or ruin—everything. Sebastian hadn’t spoken much since they left Berlin. His gaze stayed fixed on the darkness beyond the window, but Elena knew better than to mistake silence for stillness. Inside him, a war was raging. “I read it,” she said quietly. His jaw tensed. “I figured.” “You were just a boy. They molded you into something useful. Not human.” He turned his head slowly. “I let them.” “No. They gave you no choice.” Sebastian exhaled harshly, running a hand through his hair. “I built an empire on the foundation of lies. On the backs of people Adrian wants to avenge.” Elena reached across the seat, placing her hand over his. “Then rebuild it. On your terms.” He looked down at their joined hands. “And if it all crumbles?” “Then we let it burn. But we don’t let it consume us.” --- When they returned to New York, the world was still pretending everything was fine. The city lights blinked obliviously. The media chattered about fashion weeks and market trends. But underneath it all, the storm was gathering. Within twenty-four hours of their return, Sebastian’s legal team was dismantled from within. Three resignations. One sudden death. A message. “Eliminate the leverage,” Elena muttered, staring at the headline flashing across the newsfeed: “Billionaire Law Firm Partner Found Dead in Car Wreck” Sebastian stood over her shoulder. “They’re warning me.” “They’re silencing you,” she snapped. He turned, pacing. “I can’t drop this in the press without implicating half the elite in North America. Politicians. CEOs. My own board members.” “And if you don’t, Adrian will,” Elena reminded him. “Do you really think he’ll play it safe?” Sebastian froze. “He won’t,” he admitted. “He never has.” --- Later that evening, Elena received a call from an unknown number. Against her better judgment, she answered. “Elena Sinclair,” the voice drawled. Male. Unfamiliar. “You’re not just a pretty face after all.” She stiffened. “Who is this?” “You don’t know me. But I know everything about you. Your past, your debts, your weaknesses. And most importantly, your husband’s.” A chill danced across her spine. “What do you want?” “To remind you that some truths should stay buried. For your sake. And his.” The line went dead. She stared at the phone, her hands trembling—not from fear, but fury. She wouldn’t let them threaten him. Not again. Not ever. --- Sebastian was in the study when she stormed in. “We’re not waiting anymore,” she said firmly. “We go public.” He raised an eyebrow. “And paint a target on our backs?” “There’s already one,” she snapped. “Someone just called me. They know about Berlin. About the file. Everything.” Sebastian stood slowly, his face hardening. “Then we fight back.” Elena grabbed the flash drive. “You said you didn’t want the empire built on lies. Prove it. Tear down the rot and start again.” He studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded. “Call Roman.” --- Roman Khaled had been Sebastian’s fixer for nearly a decade. Former intelligence. Highly discreet. Highly expensive. If anyone could handle a controlled leak with minimal collateral damage, it was him. He arrived within the hour. “This isn’t a leak,” Roman said, flipping through the decrypted files. “This is a declaration of war.” Sebastian folded his arms. “Then suit up.” Roman glanced at Elena. “You sure about this? Once this goes live, there’s no going back. No more backdoors. No more deniability.” “I married a man built from cold steel,” she said evenly. “I’ll walk through fire with him if I have to.” Roman cracked a rare grin. “You found yourself a good one.” --- The plan was simple. Or as simple as it could be. First, Roman would create a data trail—leaks attributed to anonymous sources. A whistleblower campaign, carefully timed to overwhelm the press and scatter attention. Second, a controlled interview with an independent journalist. Elena volunteered to be the face. “They won’t see me coming,” she said when Sebastian hesitated. “They expect me to be the trophy wife. I’ll be the dagger instead.” He didn’t argue. He only kissed her forehead with the kind of reverence that made her chest ache. “You’re braver than I’ll ever be,” he whispered. “Then let me be your shield.” --- The day the news broke, the world gasped. Headlines exploded across every platform. “Secret Programs, Billionaire Connections, and Psychological Grooming—A Corporate Conspiracy Uncovered” “Sinclair Empire Shaken as Insider Speaks Out” “Project Mirror: How the Elite Trained Future Kings of Industry” In a studio bathed in white light, Elena faced the cameras, calm and composed. “I’m not here to destroy my husband,” she said. “I’m here to stand beside him. To uncover what was done to him. And to ensure no child is ever shaped into a weapon again.” The world listened. And it began to question. --- But not everyone applauded. That night, someone broke into their penthouse. The alarm didn’t go off. Nothing was taken. Just one message left in red paint across the living room window: “You should’ve stayed silent.” Sebastian read it with clenched fists. Elena stood beside him, breathing hard. “They want us scared.” “Then let’s scare them back.” He pulled out his phone. Dialed. “Adrian. We need to meet.” --- In a shadowed café tucked into a forgotten corner of Manhattan, the brothers sat face to face for the first time without rage in their eyes. “You did it,” Adrian said, sipping his coffee. “Didn’t think you had the spine.” Sebastian didn’t blink. “We both lost our childhoods. I won’t let someone else lose theirs.” Adrian nodded slowly. “Then we finish what they started.” Elena leaned in. “Together?” Adrian’s smile was cold. “If you’re ready to burn down the old world... I’ll hand you the match.”
