I have been locked in for two days, in pain and in great thirst.
Today I had finally managed to fight off my thirst and sat up a little too weak when I got startled by the voice in my head.
'You did a great job, son.’
My reddened eyes bulged and I looked around.
I was sure as hell I didn't imagine that voice.
“What are you? Show yourself." I commanded in a cracked voice.
‘Fear not son. It is I, the djinn of your clan. I was sent to help you.’
I watched a smoky substance evaporate from my body before materializing into a shadowy being right in front of me.
My jaw tensed at the realization.
I know I should bow, but I was too angry to even look him directly in the face.
“I did not want to do this.”
‘Aahh! You were led to the right place son. I can perceive that the royal jaded ring was somewhere around here a few years back.’
Is he kidding me right now? Did he just say a few years back?
I held my peace and watched him.
‘You did a good job.’
“Get out."
‘I have…’
"Leave. I do not need your help.”
‘But I can't just walk away. I have been bound to you…like your familiar spirit and we need to fulfill the mission of finding the royal…’
I gritted my teeth, when I sensed he was smiling.
"I unbind you.” I snarled.
‘That's not how it works son. You are a few hundred years old…’
"A hundred and eighty years old.” I corrected him.
‘Good. Still a kid. Stay put. I won't disturb till I am needed.’
The door got pushed open and he puffed into thin air.
I closed my eyes.
"Who were you talking to?” Emma asked, her eyes roaming around the prison of a room.
What right does she have barging into my matrimonial room?
"Where is…"
“You mean Tessa?" Emma folded her arms beneath her breasts as she stepped into the small space.
Her eyes moved from my now thin and tortured face to my bare chest.
“You recovered faster than expected."
I raised a brow. Was she expecting me to die in my sleep or something?
“Where is my wife?" I insisted, my eyes threatening to turn back to red.
“She is busy with chores and we need an extra hand. Snap out of your weakness." She clucked her tongue.
“You can't be disabled and useless at the same time. It'll be a waste of food and space."
Food and space? Is she kidding? When have I ever eaten since my arrival here?
And this? What right does she have to call this sorry state a space?
“Who were you talking to?” She asked again, more firmly.
"Myself.” I grunted knowing I should really hold back.
“Aha! I see you are not just a beggar and disabled, you are also crazy too. A full package."
I held myself back as she laughed her way out.
What am I to wear?
I made to stand and realized that I could stand without any help.
I blinked down at my legs, they were perfectly fine but wouldn't it be suspicious that I walk out of here in good shape?
Just as I was about to take a step forward, the door pushed open again and I sank back to the bed.
What was their problem with barging in unannounced?
“Draven?" Her low voice made my body go still.
I snapped my head up to catch her watchful eyes.
“Tessa?" I called, my gum immediately growing itchy from renewed thirst.
“How are you?" She asked, her head bowed and hands clasped in front of her.
I just stared at her, not knowing what to say in response.
“I heard you were awake and growing crazy."
What?
“I am sorry. I promise not to tell on you." She peeked at me through her lashes and I felt myself calm down.
“Just promise not to harm me.” She bit her lower lips and I released a sigh.
"I only need something to put on.”
She nodded and walked out the door only to return in a few seconds with a bag of clothes.
I took out the clothes one after the other, wrinkling my nose at the musty smell that came off them.
"What are these?”
"Clothes.” She responded like I should know what clothes are without having to ask.
I cast her a side glance and she shifted uncomfortably on her toes.
"Conrad's old clothes.”
I closed my eyes and face palmed.
"I am never…"
'Yes, you are.’ The djinn interrupted from within me.
“Oh shut up!" I screamed back at him and watched Tessa jump in fright, eyes wide as she stared around.
“Were you…”
"I wasn't talking to you.” I was almost about to grab my hair and pull it out.
"I'll meet you outside in a bit.” She turned to go but paused.
"Eerhmm, do you… like…need help dressing? I mean, your leg…”
"I am good.” I cut her shut.
She nodded once before stepping out of the tiny room.
“Where can I take a bath?" I asked before she closed the door behind her.
She paused again, her face growing red as she shakily pointed to the tiny door I hadn't noticed till now.
I raised my brows and stared back at her.
“I'll wait out for you." She forced a smile and shut the door.
Walking towards the tiny door, I forced it open and my jaw dropped at the sorry state before me.
