Both women turned to look at me and I stumbled backwards involuntarily.
Tessa's eyes were as cold as ice, I felt sudden chills run up my arms as I shivered, my teeth chattering.
“Do you really?" The Governor's wife had a wide creepy smile on her face now with a brow raised.
I wanted to nod but my neck felt stiff as I watched her tighten her grip on Tessa's chin, her claws almost breaking through Tessa's skin.
“Your disabled husband says he loves you." She said.
"Ye…yes ma'am.” Tessa's head bobbed frantically.
"Let's see about that.” She turned back to look at me, her head tilted to the side.
"Don't you think it's time to present yourselves before the guests?”
I clenched my jaws as I struggled to hold back a cry.
It was getting unbearable, the fear sipping into me from the mate bond made my head feel full and my thoughts go round in slow circles.
What am I supposed to do?
'Nothing.’ Came the djinn nonchalant response.
"f**k you!” I hissed in-between my teeth, snapping my eyes shut to restrain the tremors about to rock my body.
"Did you just say something?”
My eyes snapped open and grew wide when my eyes met with the Governor wife's narrowed eyes.
She had her back turned to Tessa and could not see the wild expression in Tessa's eyes.
“I…”
My ears began to ring, my chest began to expand as I clutched my cane like my life depended on it. I felt like I was about to scream.
This emotion was foreign and when my eyes met Tessa's eyes again, I knew then that she was barely holding on to her sanity.
The woman took slow steps towards me and I shuddered.
I wasn't supposed to be this weak in front of an ordinary human, I bit down on my inner cheeks till I felt a metallic tang of blood on my tongue.
“What did you say just now?" She hissed at me, her eyes growing wide with anger.
I shook my head slowly at her, feeling every bit of Tessa's unstable emotions and my frustrations growing within the seconds.
I saw her hand twitch and ducked in time to avoid her palm meeting my chin.
When I straightened, she had her mouth agape.
'Draven Dexter! What do you think you are doing dodging her slap and making things worse for me!?’ Tessa's loud thought made my head spin for a bit.
I watched the Governor's wife look down at her palm before looking up at me.
“Did you just dodge my slap?" She asked slowly and before I could answer, she turned swiftly.
Tessa shook violently till her legs gave her as she fell to the floor.
My knees buckled but I held on as I watched her begin to shake her head at the middle aged woman.
I expected the worst but the Governor's wife just stretched out her hand to Tessa.
“Ma'am?" Tessa looked from her outstretched hand to her face.
“Why don't we go downstairs Tessa? They will be wondering where I disappeared to, don't you think?"
“Yes. Yes!" Tessa jumped to her feet looking startled and not even bothering to look my way.
“Hold on to my hand, will you?" She cooed, her voice making my stomach churn in disgust.
“Yes, yes." Tessa nodded again, her eyes down casted as she held on to the woman's free hand.
“Why don't you come with us boy?" She turned to look at me, a sweet smile on her face.
“I…”
"Draven.” Tessa's voice was low but firm.
I gave a single nod and walked behind them as they exited the room, my eyes moving from the woman's back to Tessa's shivering frame.
My eyes hardened. Who was Tessa really?
Channeling my concentration inwards, I examined the bond between us and there was nothing to feel. No single emotion.
Not even fear.
As we walked closer to the stairs, my ears perked up at the woman's disturbing buzz. She had five different thoughts going on at once.
I wanted to clap my hand over my ears or probably strangle her till she quietened but I increased my concentration squinting closely at her straight back.
‘...stairs…yes!’
My brows drew tighter.
What was she on about?
I watched her turn to look at Tessa whose head bowed lower the moment she felt the Governor's wife's eyes on her.
I gritted my teeth.
I will have no wife of mine cower in the presence of a measly human.
'...yes…now!’ Then she paused.
Yes?
Now?
Those were the only words I could catch from her complicated thoughts.
My feet came to a halt as I watched her closely. The soft music from down the stairs suddenly faded as I zeroed my focus on Tessa.
A tremor rocked through me and I fought not to stumble forward.
There it was again. The blinding fear.
'She is about to do it again. She is about to do it again. She is about to…’ I blocked Tessa's thoughts out.
What was she on about?
My lips were beginning to quiver as I took three steps back from them.
I watched her let go of Tessa's hand and my throat grew dry.
Perspiration was beginning to pool under my armpit as I watched the Governor's wife give Tessa a nudge towards the stairs before casting a side glance at me.
I tried to move but my feet felt stuck to the floor. My blood was beginning to hum as my rage began to grow, surpassing Tessa's complicated emotions.
‘Keep calm boy.’ The djinn's voice blared in my head but I blocked him out too.
“Jump.” She ordered Tessa.
At once Tessa leaped in the air and I dashed forward, throwing my cane to the floor.
