I stood uncomfortably, shaking with restrained anger as I watched the scene unfold.
Tessa had led me into their lowly mansion after staring speechlessly at me for a few minutes in front of the Marriage Bureau.
She had made me stand in the corner of the sitting room and promise not to intervene no matter what happened.
“Do you not have any bones in you!" Her supposed sister snapped, eyes wide as she palmed her forehead in fake frustration.
“You good for nothing Human!" Her mother snarled, hitting Tessa with the silky material in her hand.
I clenched my cane even tighter.
“I am sorry! I am sorry! I didn't mean to…”
"Oh shut up and get it down right!”
I turned my face away from the trio and caught the eyes of the man leaning against the doorframe.
Straightening, he walked towards me with eyes so dark that I felt my body begin to angle backwards in the bid to escape him.
"Boy!” He boomed and from the corner of my eyes, I noticed the trio had stopped whatever they were doing.
I clenched my teeth and forced my eyes to stare at my feet.
“What do you think you are doing standing idly at the corner?" He asked, standing right under my nose.
I cleared my throat.
“I don't know my way around and my wife said to wait here."
There was a minute of silence before I got startled by the roar of laughter that came from him, accompanied with that of his wife and daughter.
I wanted to wrap my hand around his throat and ask him what was funny but I held myself in, watching him in forced silence until he doubled over and started coughing.
“Wife, huh?"
I turned back to meet the sneering face of Tessa's sister.
“I think you've found yourself a lover boy, Tessa and he is so sweet." She said condescendingly.
I watched Tessa bow her head in shame, her clutch on the piece of clothing she held grew tighter till I felt like I was growing out of breath.
What sort of embarrassment was this?
"Alright, alright. Go on boy. Go on and observe your wife, it's your honeymoon by the way.”
Tessa's sister covered her lips to hold back another sneer while my supposed wife blinked a fresh tear from her eyes.
Gritting my teeth, I turned my back to them and hobbled out of the room, my breath coming out in small puffs.
My father is crazy but sending me all the way here in this condition was the craziest he had ever been.
I don't know how I would do it, but I need to find a way out of here and back to my clan.
At least I haven't signed the papers yet, some other member of the clan can come hunt for the royal jaded ring theirselves. I have had enough for a lifetime.
“Where do you think you are going?" The loud broken voice stopped me in my tracks.
I blinked at the dim hallway.
What?
“Where do you think you are going?" She asked again before I began to hear the stomping of her foot on the floor.
I felt her stop and I turned in time to catch her tiny hands before they met my chest.
She was huffing, her cheeks puffed and her face stained with tears.
“Where were you heading to?" She screamed in my face.
I almost winced at the pain from my leg but schooled my expression.
“Out." I responded coldly.
She blinked at me and soon she was barking out a strange laughter mixed with tears.
“I am so unlucky that even a disabled beggar would want to abandon me." She cried, biting the back of her hand.
I felt my ears grow large with a strange ringing to it.
“What do you just say?" My eyes blazed but she wasn't still looking at my face.
"I am so unlucky that even a disabled…"
With a growl, I let go of her hands and held her chin firmly, my jaws clenched.
How dare she call me disabled and a beggar to my face?
“I dare you to repeat that Tessa.” I challenged her, forcing her to look into my eyes.
"Repeat that, and watch what I would do to you." I growled in her face but blinked rapidly when I saw her tiny frame begin to shake.
As if I was latching onto coal, I let her chin go and hobbled backwards.
“What are you?" Her eyes were bulging this time.
“What?" I asked, my throat growing dry and my gum starting to get itchy from thirst.
“Yo…your ey…eyes!” She screeched.
"Your eyes! They are…" I moved without thinking and soon, I had my hands over her lips, suppressing her scream into muffled moans.
"Shhh!” I hissed, my vision turning red.
I could feel it, the awakening of the real me. I blinked twice, then thrice when a strange sound floated into my ears.
Dum! Ba-dum! Dum!
What the hell was that?
I looked down at Tessa and she looked up at me too with wide eyes.
Suddenly, I could see the veins in her neck pulsating and the sound of her rushing blood floated into my ear, invading my senses.
Lowering my head slowly, I tilted her head backwards and pressed my ear to her chest ignoring the frantic muffled sounds from her lips.
The strange sound was from her chest.
Her heart?
How did I forget that unlike us, humans have an organ called ‘the heart'?
"Oh my God! You guys are so disgusting!” Blair cried from the door.
