A Study In Green “Is one ever truly ready for a fight?” Brit Guilt was a powerful motivator. It’s what had been motivating me since that day at the library, just as much as The Book of Briars itself. Whether Lauren could truly be to blame for what happened to her sister was a question I wasn’t qualified to answer. But the need to survive could overwhelm any sense of decency or caution, even in the best of us. I found it difficult to blame a child for grasping at the only lifeline she had. The closer the Mountaineers came to finding the next fragment, the closer the day of the Cagliostro’s Translation came, and the more nervous I grew. It was like approaching the edge of an active volcano. At what point would we become blackened and blistered husks, too scorched and melted to turn back?
