The next morning Julie awoke to the subdued hum of a treadmill, punctuated only by Janus’s footpads as he ran kilometre after kilometre, not seeming to tire one iota. The amount of energy the young man had was incredible. He’d taken his customary three hours sleep after the movie had finished and, on awakening at 3:00 am, he’d assembled the multi-gym so that he could concentrate on getting into shape for the challenges that lay ahead.
Julie stood in the doorway watching him run. It had always been strange to go to work every day and discover that he’d sprouted a few inches or bulked up a little overnight but now he was almost physically a man and living under her roof.
