The thought hit me so hard that I had to grip the kitchen counter.
My pulse thundered in my ears.
No.
No.
I was getting ahead of myself.
I hadn’t taken a test.
I hadn’t seen a doctor.
I didn’t know anything.
For all I knew, stress was wreaking havoc on my body.
A divorce.
A settlement conference.
A marriage collapsing.
Any one of those things could throw off a menstrual cycle.
All three?
It would be stranger if my body wasn’t reacting.
I took a deep breath.
Then another.
But no matter how many times I tried to reason with myself, my eyes kept drifting back to the calendar on my phone.
Late.
Several days late.
My stomach twisted.
I needed to know.
Not tomorrow.
