Chapter 11

1158 Words
Summer’s POV For the first time since we’d gotten married… Ethan had nothing to say. He just stood there. Looking at me as though he was waiting for me to crack. Waiting for me to apologize. Waiting for me to say I’d gone too far. I didn’t. The silence stretched between us until it became uncomfortable. Finally, he laughed. It wasn’t amused. It was the kind of laugh people used when reality refused to cooperate. “So that’s really it.” I nodded. “That’s really it.” “You’d throw away our marriage.” “No.” I met his eyes calmly. “I’m walking away from a marriage you already threw away.” His jaw tightened. “I told you…” “You’ve told me enough.” I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t need to. “If you have anything else to say…” I picked up my handbag from the sofa. “…say it to my lawyer.” His expression froze. “Lawyer?” “Yes.” “You’ve already spoken to one?” “I will.” The tiny pause before my answer was so small he didn’t notice it. “I’ll have one soon.” “You’ll be hearing from them.” Something flashed across his face. Not guilt. Not sadness. Panic. Real panic. “Summer…” “No.” I shook my head. “I’m done talking.” “You can’t just leave.” “I can.” “This is our home.” “It was.” His breathing became uneven. “Where are you even going?” “Somewhere I can breathe.” His voice softened. Almost pleading. “Please.” I stopped. Not because he’d changed my mind. Because I wanted him to hear me one last time. Without interruption. Without excuses. Without manipulation. I turned back to him. “I loved you.” The words hurt. “I loved you enough to keep choosing you.” “Even when you stopped choosing me.” His eyes reddened. “I kept hoping every version of you I missed would come back.” A lump formed in my throat. “But somewhere along the way…” “…I disappeared instead.” I smiled sadly. “I’m finally going to find her again.” I didn’t wait for an answer. There wasn’t one he could give that would change anything. I walked past him. Upstairs. Every step felt strangely light. The bedroom door creaked open. For a moment, I simply stood there. This room had once been my favorite place in the world. Now… It felt like a museum. Full of memories that no longer belonged to me. I pulled my suitcase from the closet. The wheels scraped softly across the hardwood floor. I didn’t overthink what I packed. A few pairs of jeans. Sweaters. Work clothes. My toiletries. My laptop. The framed photograph from my college graduation. The small journal I kept hidden in the bedside drawer. I reached for the wedding photograph sitting on the dresser. My fingers hovered over it. Then slowly… I let my hand fall. No. That could stay. It belonged to this house now. Not to me. Twenty minutes later, I zipped the suitcase shut. It wasn’t everything I owned. Just everything I needed. The rest could wait until the lawyers became involved. I slipped my wedding ring from my finger. For several seconds, I stared at it resting in my palm. A simple band. So much hope had once lived inside it. I walked downstairs. Ethan was exactly where I’d left him. Standing in the middle of the living room. As though time had stopped. His eyes immediately dropped to my suitcase. Then to my hand. To the ring. Without a word, I crossed the room. Placed it gently on the hallway table beside his car keys. The soft clink echoed through the silent house. His breathing hitched. “Summer…” I looked at him one last time. “My lawyer will contact you.” The words came out steady. Professional. Final. “Take care of yourself.” He took one step toward me. I took one toward the front door. He stopped. So did I. Without turning around, I said quietly, “I hope one day you understand…” I wrapped my fingers around the doorknob. “…that losing me didn’t start yesterday.” “It started the moment you stopped valuing me.” Then I opened the door. And walked out. The afternoon air greeted me like freedom. For the first time in years… The weight on my chest felt just a little lighter. I pulled out my phone. My fingers hovered over the screen before tapping the number I’d memorized years ago. “Lena?” “I’m outside.” There wasn’t even half a ring before she answered. “You left?” “I did.” There was a pause. Then… “I’m proud of you.” The words almost broke me. I smiled through the tears threatening to return. I waved down the first cab that slowed beside the curb. The driver stepped out and loaded my suitcase into the trunk. “Where to, ma’am?” I gave him Lena’s address. Then back at the house I’d once called home. For the first time… It didn’t feel like home anymore. I climbed into the backseat. “Just take me there.” The driver nodded. As the cab pulled away from the curb, I didn’t look back again. Some chapters don’t deserve one last glance. They deserve an ending. The city looked different from the backseat of a cab. Maybe it hadn’t changed at all. Maybe I had. Buildings I’d driven past a hundred times suddenly seemed unfamiliar. People hurried along sidewalks with coffee cups in hand, couples laughed as they crossed the street, and somewhere in the distance, a cyclist rang the tiny bell on his handlebars. Life moved forward. Whether hearts were breaking or not. I rested my forehead against the cool window. My phone buzzed. Once. Twice. Then again. I didn’t have to look to know who it was. Still… Curiosity won. Ethan Calling… The screen glowed for several seconds before the call disappeared. A moment later… Another one. I watched it ring. Then let it die. A text appeared almost immediately. Ethan: Please answer. Another. Ethan: Let’s talk. Then another. Ethan: Don’t do this. I stared at the words. Yesterday… Those messages would have sent me into a panic. I would’ve answered on the first ring. I would’ve apologized for not picking up sooner. I would’ve convinced myself we could work everything out. Today… I locked my phone without replying. The silence felt… liberating. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. “Everything alright, ma’am?” I smiled politely. “It will be.” He nodded as though that was enough. “I hope so.” I looked back out the window. Me too.
