Morning arrived with a blanket of silver mist covering Blackwood Manor.
Long before sunrise, the servants were already hard at work.
Elara tied her long chestnut hair into a neat bun before putting on her maid's uniform. Although she had barely slept the previous night, she refused to complain. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Alpha Kael's piercing silver gaze.
Why had he stopped in front of her?
Why hadn't he punished her?
The questions lingered in her mind, but she quickly pushed them aside. She was only a maid. Whatever had happened yesterday meant nothing.
Or so she believed.
---
In another part of the mansion, Alpha Kael stood on the balcony overlooking the vast forest that surrounded his estate.
The cool morning breeze carried familiar scents—pine, earth, rain...
Then another scent reached him.
Vanilla.
Wildflowers.
Something warm and comforting.
His wolf stirred immediately.
Mate.
Kael clenched his fists.
"Enough," he growled under his breath.
"I don't have a mate."
His wolf disagreed.
Every instinct urged him to find the girl.
To protect her.
To keep her close.
Kael had spent years leading his pack with discipline and reason. He wasn't about to let instinct control him now.
Yet the scent refused to leave his mind.
---
The mansion's strict housekeeper, Mrs. Agnes, clapped her hands loudly.
"Listen carefully!"
Every maid stood in a straight line.
"We are hosting important guests tonight. Every room must be spotless."
She pointed toward Elara.
"You'll clean the west wing."
Several maids exchanged nervous glances.
One whispered, "That's where the Alpha's office is."
Another shook her head.
"Poor girl."
Elara swallowed but nodded politely.
"Yes, ma'am."
---
The west wing was silent.
Unlike the rest of the mansion, very few servants entered this part of the house.
Elara dusted the hallway carefully, making sure not to touch anything she wasn't supposed to.
As she passed a large window, she noticed movement outside.
A little boy, no older than seven, was chasing a bright red ball across the courtyard.
He laughed happily.
Then everything happened at once.
The ball rolled toward the pack's training grounds.
Two massive wolves were sparring there.
The child ran after it.
One of the wolves lost control and lunged forward.
"Watch out!" Elara screamed.
Without thinking, she raced outside.
The huge wolf couldn't stop in time.
Elara threw herself toward the little boy, wrapping her arms around him just as the wolf crashed into them.
They tumbled across the grass.
The boy was unharmed.
Elara, however, struck her shoulder against a stone.
Pain shot through her body.
The training ground fell silent.
Every warrior stared.
The wolf immediately shifted back into his human form.
"I'm so sorry!" he exclaimed.
"I didn't see him!"
The little boy burst into tears.
Before anyone could speak, a deep voice echoed across the courtyard.
"What happened?"
Everyone froze.
Alpha Kael had arrived.
His silver eyes immediately found Elara.
She sat on the ground, holding her injured shoulder while comforting the frightened child.
"It's alright," she whispered softly.
"You're safe."
The little boy buried his face against her chest.
Kael looked from the crying child to the trembling maid.
For a brief moment...
His heart tightened.
His wolf purred proudly.
She protected one of ours.
---
Later that afternoon...
Mrs. Agnes insisted Elara visit the pack doctor.
"It isn't serious," the elderly doctor said after examining her shoulder.
"You'll have bruising for a few days."
Elara smiled politely.
"Thank you."
As she left the clinic, she heard footsteps behind her.
She turned.
The little boy stood there holding a small white flower.
"I... I picked this for you."
She smiled warmly.
"It's beautiful."
"My name is Liam."
"I'm Elara."
He looked down shyly.
"Thank you for saving me."
She knelt despite the pain in her shoulder.
"I'm glad you're alright."
Liam hugged her tightly before running back toward the mansion.
Neither of them noticed Alpha Kael watching from a distance.
He had seen everything.
The way she comforted the child.
The gentleness in her voice.
The kindness in her smile.
His wolf whispered again.
She belongs with us.
Kael turned away.
"No."
---
That evening...
The mansion buzzed with activity as guests from neighboring packs arrived.
Elara and the other maids served food throughout the grand dining hall.
She kept her eyes lowered.
She didn't notice the jealous stares coming from some of the female pack members.
One of them, Lady Selena, sat beside Alpha Kael.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Confident.
Everyone believed she would soon become Luna.
As Elara poured wine into Kael's glass, Selena's eyes narrowed.
"So..."
She smiled sweetly.
"You're the new maid."
"Yes, my lady."
"I've heard you've already managed to attract the Alpha's attention."
The room became unusually quiet.
Elara looked confused.
"I haven't, my lady."
Selena leaned closer.
"Know your place."
Before Elara could respond, one of the guests accidentally knocked over a candle.
The tablecloth caught fire.
Panic erupted.
People rushed away from the flames.
Elara grabbed a nearby pitcher of water and emptied it onto the burning cloth.
The fire died instantly.
The room fell silent once more.
Everyone stared at her.
Kael stood from his chair.
For the first time...
He spoke directly to her.
"You handled that well."
The servants gasped.
Even Beta Ronan looked surprised.
Elara lowered her head respectfully.
"Thank you, Alpha."
Kael nodded once before leaving the dining hall.
But Selena's smile had completely disappeared.
Her eyes followed Elara with growing hatred.
Inside her mind, one thought echoed again and again.
If the Alpha continues to notice that maid... she'll become a problem.
And Selena had never allowed anyone to stand between her and what she wanted.
Not even an innocent maid.
Far away in the darkness beyond Blackwood Manor, a cloaked figure watched the mansion from the edge of the forest.
A wicked smile spread across his face.
"So... the Moon Goddess has finally chosen the Alpha's mate."
He turned and disappeared into the shadows.
"Let the games begin..."
