THE DETECTIVE AND LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Morning arrived slowly over the city, gray clouds hanging low in the sky. Inside the police station, tension filled the air. Detective Han Ji-hoon stood in front of a bulletin board covered in photos of missing criminals. Red strings connected names, dates, and locations. Each case looked the same. A criminal was arrested. A trial happened. The criminal was declared not guilty. Then the criminal disappeared. No bodies. No witnesses. No clues. Just gone. Ji-hoon rubbed his tired eyes. He hadn’t slept much in weeks. His uniform was slightly wrinkled, and his dark hair fell messily over his forehead. But his sharp gaze showed determination. “This isn’t normal,” he muttered. Another officer approached him cautiously. “Detective, the chief wants you in his office.” Ji-hoon nodded and walked down the hallway. His boots echoed against the tile floor. Something about these cases bothered him deeply, like a puzzle missing one critical piece. He entered the chief’s office. The chief sat behind his desk, looking serious. “We have another disappearance,” the chief said. Ji-hoon sighed quietly. “That makes five.” The chief nodded. “All connected to the same courtroom.” Ji-hoon’s eyes narrowed. “Judge Kang Bitna.” The room fell silent.Later that afternoon, Ji-hoon stood outside Courtroom Three, holding a case file. He had requested permission to observe the next hearing. He wanted to see the judge for himself. The courtroom doors opened. People began to enter. Then she walked in. Judge Kang Bitna. Justitia moved calmly to the judge’s seat, her black robe flowing behind her. Her expression was composed, her posture straight, her presence powerful. The moment Ji-hoon saw her, his breath caught. Something inside him shifted instantly. He couldn’t explain it. He had seen many people in his life—victims, criminals, witnesses—but never someone who made his heart react so suddenly. Love at first sight. He stared at her, stunned. She raised her head slightly, scanning the room. For a brief second, their eyes met. A strange sensation passed between them—like electricity in the air. Justitia felt it too. A faint disturbance in her mind. She looked away quickly. Inside her thoughts, a warning echoed: Do not fall in love. She tightened her grip on the gavelThat evening, Ji-hoon drove home under the fading light of sunset. His small house sat on a quiet street lined with trees. It wasn’t fancy, but it was warm and peaceful. He opened the front door. “Mom, I’m home.” No answer. He stepped inside. The living room was silent. A cold feeling settled in his chest. He walked slowly toward the kitchen. Then he froze. A glass lay shattered on the floor. A chair was knocked over. His heart began to pound. He rushed down the hallway. “Mom?” He pushed open her bedroom door. And stopped. His adopted mother lay motionless on the floor. The room was still. Too still. Ji-hoon dropped to his knees beside her, his hands trembling. “Mom…?” No response. The truth hit him like a wave. She was gone. Tears filled his eyes, but he forced himself to stay calm. Years of police training kept him steady, even as his heart broke. He clenched his fists. “I will find who did this,” he whispered.
