CHAPTER 3 KYAN “I am glad you are back, Kyan, and you came in just in time to welcome my daughter. Kathleen gave birth yesterday.” Sergeant Robin smiled warmly at me, he found joy in sharing the news of his family, while I couldn't. “Great,” I replied and stared out the window as the car drove out of the airport. “I was at the hospital until I got your call, I do offer my apology once again.” He said and I gave no reply. I knew my silence was making it hard for him to contemplate if I was still angry about being stuck at the airport for six hours straight. I was the least worried or angry, I had no remark to pass on, and I just wanted to enjoy the peace. Having spent almost the entire day at the airport, the sky darkened by the time we arrived at the pack house. As the car pulled to a halt, I alighted grabbing my bag and weapon pouches. Sergeant Robin rushed to my side trying to take the nags of me, but I stopped him with the wave of my hand. “Go back to your wife and child, I can manage,” I said and a smile of gratitude descended on his face. Not having the time to listen to him say a million thanks, I continued on my way. The packed house was almost empty as I stepped in. I didn't expect a grand welcome, but some courtesy would have been appreciated. “Alpha heir!” Someone gasped behind me, it was a maid and she seemed surprised to see me. “You are welcome, Alpha heir. Please let me get you settled in, and send words to your father on your arrival.” “Where is Alpha Stan?” I asked instead. “Alpha Stan is seated in the battle arena, a duel between Gamma Scarlett and the rogue slave is on at the moment.” My brows knotted in disbelief, Scarlett is highly ranked, why would she fight a rogue slave? The lowest ranked slaves in Blood Lake. “Take me there.” I dropped my bag and the maid without a word of protest led me to the battle arena. I thought this project to build a battle arena was a joke, but he did it anyway, and for what? To match the strong and the weak for his vile entertainment. I could feel my veins popping at the moment we arrived at the arena and met people dispersing, they seemed to be heading somewhere else rather than their respective homes. Sighting me they all paused, the look of surprise on their face baffled me, was no one informed of my arrival or what? “Alpha heir!” The chorus bowing to me, I ignored it more focused on finding out about the duel. “What's going on here?” One of them stepped forward and bowed. “Welcome home Alpha heir!” “That doesn't answer my question.” I thundered, causing the rest of them to shiver. “Forgive me Alpha heir, there was a duel between Gamma Scarlett and the Rogue slave. Gamma Scarlett has been led to the infirmary because the rogue slave had cheated and knocked her out. Alpha Stan has requested her execution at the Death stump.” I felt uncomfortable hearing this and I suddenly grew worried. Was it because my childhood friend and one of the best warrior women had been knocked out by a slave or was it something entirely different? The infirmary was supposed to be my destination, but I found myself racing to the death stump. The massive crowd that gathered filled me with disgust, how these people were so eager to watch someone die annoyed me. Unfortunately, my anger immediately vanished as I stepped into the crowd. My nose rose in constant sniffs as it caught the loveliest scent I had perceived in forever. Lily and cinnamon are two entirely different combinations, how could it smell this good? I pushed my way into the crowd mesmerised by the scent and the closer I drew, the sharper it got. Until I got to the middle front and was able to speculate what was going on, the scent was suddenly mixed with a metallic bloody scent and my heart sank. The only person who had blood dropped over was the rogue slave, who had her head placed on a stump ready to be hacked. The rogue slave was my mate. My wolf's emotions surged through me, one of pure joy. A sudden wave of protectiveness engulfed me and I subconsciously yelled. “STOP!” Causing Sergeant Gabriel to halt his action. The sweet scent of lily messed with my brain, and my rage started piling up in my chest. The petite bloody lady dragged herself up from the podium, and a loud collective gasp ensued from the crowd. Even I was shocked to see someone so brutally injured still have the strength to get on her feet. As she rose to her feet, my eyes met hers and I realised she was looking at me. Her gaze was blunt and unreadable and then she suddenly fell flat on the podium, a loud thudding sound accompanying her fall. My hands were subconsciously outstretched, I had tried to reach out to her from where I was. I pushed my way out of the crowd and went up the stairs grabbing her in my arms, blood was oozing from her head drenching my clothes. The crowd paved the way for me as I ran at great speed, heading to the pack house infirmary. I got there within minutes as the nurses rushed to my aid, rolling a stretcher with them. I carefully placed the unconscious lady on the bed and she was wheeled away. I heard marching footsteps behind me and turned around to find two warriors standing before me. They bowed slightly and then relayed the message. “Alpha heir, Alpha Stan requests your presence in his private chambers.” I didn't want to leave, but I needed an explanation for what I had just witnessed on the day I was supposed to be welcomed. Alpha Stan chose to behead a slave and not just any slave, but a rogue slave who is now shockingly my mate. Without uttering a word, I let them lead me to his chambers. We arrived a short while later, and while they waited outside the door, I walked in and met him pacing, his face red from the anger seething through his veins at the moment. “How dare you?! How dare you Kyan?!” He roared advancing towards me, his glare was hard and rageful as he stared at me. I gritted my teeth, staring at the man I once called father, he had not changed, and after 12 long years, I didn't know why I expected change, but a certain part of me thought maybe there would be. “What are you even doing here? You were supposed to arrive tomorrow, so much for the wrong time.” He groaned and tossed a vase of flowers across the room. He returned to me pointing his finger close to my face, I didn't react, I just stood there, wishing I could snap his head. “I came home after twelve years and you seem the least excited to see your son,” I stated the words feeling bitter against my tongue. Alpha Stan scoffed, backing away from me. He took a seat on his chair and brought out a cigarette, lighting it up. Not even the slightest habit changed from this man. My fist clenched and unclenched, it acted as a stress ball to soothe my burning rage. “I was this close, so close to getting rid of that wench and you just had to appear from the depths of hell to ruin it. You are a disgrace!” “You are not much of a saint either. Your past actions have brought this upon me. I am being punished for your sins. Your Sins!” I barked. “Shut up! I will not have you speak to me in such a manner. You have made a fool out of me in the eyes of the pack members and for that, she will die mercilessly.” “That's not going to happen, you won't kill her.” “And what right do you have to stop me? Do you even know who that slave is? She will die!” Alpha Stan deadpanned. “You cannot kill her.” I countered. “Have you lost your mind?! A slave! Not just any slave but a rogue slave. How dare you stand here and exchange words with me for a wretched slave.” “BECAUSE SHE IS MY MATE! DARN IT!” I fired back, my gaze turning blind from rage.
