Touch down and I couldn't be happier to see the ground again I have missed you soo much. Stepping off the plane I grab my bag and head to the quarters awaiting orders to when we will be travelling to our base. Waiting side by side with Connor now he finally has a smile, it's good to see the platoon smiling and being together as a family we trust each other a lot so it makes our job a whole lot easier. After half an hour waiting and get our orders, everyone starts packing the vans while I check the medical equipment hoping everything is accounted for. Following the clipboard I check and then double check everything before helping the boys with the van, we set off tomorrow at zero seven hundred hours, why do we always have to leave early. Passing along the boxes in a line while Riley and Danny pack on the van I look around to see a couple of Kenya army they don't look too worried but anyone can bomb a place with a car. Rolling my eyes I get back to work wanting the van packed before sun down.
Waking up at five in the morning I had down the cafeteria for some breakfast before leaving and meeting everyone. Just grabbing an apple and a bottle of water I take a seat on a empty table looking out the window when the lieutenant approaches and takes a seat opposite to me with a smile
"Halley, you be teaching a couple of Kenya men about medical treatment" I don't mind treating them a couple of things I have picked up but I would love a heads up before we arrived
"Of course sir" I say getting back to my breakfast while he leaves to grab his own. As the minutes go pass the cafeteria starts to get busy with the men coming in for breakfast, my platoon has already arrived and are in line. I wait for them so we can head together I just hope they aren't slow eaters. After meeting everyone and being told where we going everyone in the van ready to go full equipped up. For this mission I'm wearing the medical badge, I enjoy more being a first responder but if they need I can be a sniper as well which sometimes I'm not used. Sitting the van we are constantly looking around for any bogeys, I'm sure they don't like us coming to there county as they don't believe we are here to help as we look like a threat with uniform on and guns in our hands. Not really enjoying the bumpy ride I try to remain calm being sneezed in between a bunch of men and there body armer, someone smells bad.
Reaching base I couldn't be happier to be off that truck, my arse is killing me honestly especially with the road. Climbing out I start to look around, it doesn't look like a bad place but I guess don't judge a book by its cover, waiting next to the truck we await orders before getting ready for the long six months. Watching the boys unpack the van I head inside the medical room ready to sort though it all, I have already checked everything before we left and I'll check again. Moving everything around before they start bring more boxes in I make sure everything is in reach and close.
The following day I'm treating patient close to the base where we be helping out with medical treatment and building shelters. An earthquake has destroy building and created a landslide, it's unsafe for them but some don't have anywhere else to go, they have already located them once already. Walking into the medical tent I'm straight to work next to another doctor that looks like he's been here awhile
"Hi I'm the medic Laura" I introduce myself waiting to get equip with how things work around here and what it's like. Looking around I can already see where they keep there medical supplies
"Hi nice to meet you, I'm Antonio" he says shaking my hand and I have to admit I quite like that name, looking at the patient it looks like they have already been treated. Letting Antonio show me round and introduce me to everyone I look out the window to see the boys cutting up wood to build fires during the nights, it's going to be a long six months.
Heading down to them I carry a box of water, don't want them as patients or worse in that white tent that contains the dead. Throwing a water at Dylan first
"Boys keep hydrated" I say throwing them around before getting pulled aside by the lieutenant, I really hope he's not asking what I think he's about to ask. As we walk side by side he's walking me over to the white tent
"I need confirmation of decreased" I look at the bodies, could these all be from the earthquakes, there a lot of dead people in this tent. Kneeling down to feel for a pulse I feel nothing and head to the next one but I feel like I'm going to throw up, the smell is that bad. One by one I'm confirming what I thought, I feel bad for them and there families, I have counted over twenty in that tent. Walking out the tent I get hit by the fresh air that I didn't know I needed, I have been holding my breath for that long that I didn't notice, the smell is quite overpowering. Taking a bottle of water I tip it over my hands and splash a little over my face before heading back over to the medical tent hoping the smells of death disappears
