Something Fishy . CHAPTER — EXPANDED VERSION (Longer, Richer & More Intense) The usually silent hall was bursting with chaotic chatter and excited squeals. It was ridiculous. Girls jumping. Boys flexing. People sniffing the air like hungry animals. Of course. It was that miserable season again. Mating season. A season filled with stupidity, impulsive kissing, random fainting, emotional breakdowns, and decisions so dumb the Moon Goddess herself would cover her eyes. Honestly, you wouldn’t even be shocked if the principal, a respected elder, was caught passionately kissing a dog behind the cafeteria. That’s how insane this season was. I walked through the madness quietly, my steps calm even though everyone else looked like they had collectively lost brain cells. I didn’t push anyone, didn’t speak, didn’t make eye contact. I simply slid through the crowd like a ghost. Invisible. Untouchable. Just the way I liked it. After all, I worked hard to stay invisible. Even changed my surname from Vaelkor to Chauverite just to avoid attention. Unlike Marenza… Miss “Look-at-me-I’m-the-Viking-King’s-daughter.” She flaunted her name everywhere like it was a diamond-plated crown. Honestly, who wouldn’t, when being the king’s daughter brought instant envy? Ria growled impatiently inside me. “Why is there so much noise today?” “Mating season,” I muttered, adjusting my hood and heading toward the library—the only peaceful place during this period of collective madness. Ria gasped loudly. “Mating season?! Oh my goddess YES! We finally get to meet our mate! I bet he’s so handsome… imagine how Marenza will be SHAKING.” I rolled my eyes. The idea of belonging to a man made my stomach knot… yet Ria’s excitement created a tiny spark inside my chest. Just a tiny one. “The Moon Goddess won’t be blind,” Ria continued. “She will match us with someone worthy. Maybe an angel. They’re dangerously cute.” “Why don’t you go date one yourself?” I asked dryly. “You think I wouldn’t?” she shot back immediately. I snorted. Of course she would. Ria had always been more bold, more reckless, more… free. Meanwhile, I was the child everyone avoided and the bully they feared—thanks to her. Our footsteps gradually left the chaos behind as we neared the library. The noise faded… replaced by a deep, familiar scent. I stopped. The scent. I knew it. Too well. I stepped closer to the library door, leaning my ear against the wood. Ria went silent—alert. Voices drifted out. A male voice. Hurt. Confused. “But why do you want to reject me?” My eyes widened slightly. Eugene. The same wolf Ophelia proudly introduced as her mate earlier. Why was he here? With her? Marenza’s cold voice sliced through the air. Sharp. Cruel. Arrogant. “Do I have to state the obvious? I’m a girl with CLASS and you’re a nobody.” My jaw tightened. “Secondly,” she continued, “I’m a Vaelkor. In case your tiny brain forgot. How do you expect me to be SEEN with a lackey like you?” The venom in her words could melt steel. The boy tried to stay composed, but pain trembled in his voice. “The Moon Goddess paired us…” “And we can reject each other.” Marenza interrupted coldly. “No!” the wolf snapped. “I’ve waited my whole life to find my mate. Now that I found you, you want to reject me? I won’t. I won’t leave you.” Marenza laughed. A slow, cruel laugh. “Such a sad story.” Her voice dripped poison. “Unfortunately… I feed on sad scenarios.” I exhaled slowly. Ria hissed, “So she’s this evil?” “Maybe worse,” I muttered. I listened as Eugene’s breathing grew shaky—heartbroken. The pain of rejection could kill a wolf. Literally. Marenza stepped closer; I could hear her heels click. “Reject me, Eugene. Do it now.” “I won’t.” “I SAID REJECT ME.”
