Chapter 1 The Grievances

1132 Words
Driven by his desire to marry the love of his life, my childhood sweetheart broke off our engagement. My father was so furious he gnashed his teeth. My brother condemned his betrayal. Only my mother looked up at the sky calmly and said, "Since they've chosen to be heartless, don't blame us for what comes next." As she spoke, she nonchalantly pulled out a contract…… Later, my former fiancé knelt at my feet, trembling and crying, "I was wrong! I was so wrong! Penelope! For the sake of our childhood friendship, please forgive me!" My handsome husband stood behind me, his eyes cold as ice. "Are you hitting on my wife?" "No! I wouldn't dare! Please, both of you, spare me!" “Humph," I let out a cold laugh. Bad man, your worst is yet to come! ***** 01 I was the future mistress of the Patel family, as decreed by the late Gabriel Patel himself, only because I had the backing of the wealthy Baker family. However, half a year had passed since the new head of the Patel family took over, and he still hadn't come to marry me as promised. As time went on, my father's face grew increasingly grim. The Baker family had never suffered such an indignity. The atmosphere at home had been heavy these past few days. Early this morning, as I was yawning and forcing down breakfast, my father stormed in, his face livid. "What's wrong?" My elder brother Matthew looked at my dad Ethan in surprise. Ethan was always cheerful and never this angry. Ethan's face was dark, a cold glint in his eyes. "The Patel family announced their engagement ceremony for tomorrow!" "Engagement!" Matthew and my younger brother Daneil's eyes lit up simultaneously. Matthew said cheerfully, "That's great! Our family is ready. Penelope can marry over anytime!" 'Hold on, Matthew, have you even asked for my opinion?' I wondered. Ethan remained silent, his face still grim. My mother Evelyn Baker sensed something was wrong and frowned. "Why the engagement? Why weren't we informed?" Ethan's face darkened even more. "It's Scarlett Turner, the daughter of the Turner family, who's engaged to the Patel family! If her dad hadn't provoked me today, we'd still be in the dark! She's walking around with her nose in the air!" Matthew and Daniel exchanged dumbfounded looks. Matthew asked foolishly, "What about Penelope?" Gabriel had promised that I would be the next mistress of the Patel family, so how did it become Scarlett? Ethan was so angry he rolled up his sleeves and cursed. "Heavens! That old man swore up and down to me that the new head of the family would marry Penelope, and it was all a lie! I trusted him and gave him everything he asked for!" Matthew chimed in, "Two years ago, during the economic crisis, it was our family that provided a large sum of money to help stabilize the Patel family's finances. No one knew who would be the leading family now if it weren't for us. The old man just passed away, and now his grandson is turning his back on us!" Just as I was wondering what Daniel was doing, I heard a clattering sound behind me. He angrily pulled out a dirty sack. "You better wait for me!" A chill ran down my spine. These men were about to lose it! I instinctively looked for my mother, knowing she was the only one who could rein them in. Looking up, I saw her gazing at the sky with a grave expression. I approached her curiously. "Mom, what are you looking at?" "It's about to storm," she said coldly. With that, she went back to her room, leaving the three men still cursing the Patel family's betrayal. When she came out, she held a red silk cloth in her hand. The three men immediately surrounded her. Matthew looked at the cloth in confusion. "What's that?" Evelyn unfolded the silk cloth, revealing my marriage contract with the Patel family. It was signed with Gabriel's name. Back then, when the Patel family was in crisis, Gabriel had received our family's support, which saved the entire family. As a gesture of gratitude, he personally promised my father that the next mistress of the Patel family could only be me. "Madam, someone from Mrs. Patel is here to see you," the butler announced softly. The current mistress of the Patel family was the former Gabriel's daughter-in-law, my fiancé's mother. She often invited my mother to the Patel family's castle, using casual conversation as a way to ask for money. Evelyn never skimped, saying that she was paving the way for our future mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. After all, I was going to marry her son, so this small amount of money was just helping out the in-laws. Evelyn sneered and tossed the marriage contract aside. "Speak of the devil. I'd like to see what she has to say for herself!" ***** I went with my mother to the Patel Castle. In just six months, the once modest castle had been transformed into a place of splendor. I wondered what Gabriel would think if he were still alive. "After Gabriel passed away, Henry inherited the family business. I've been so busy that I haven't had the chance to invite you over, Evelyn. You won't blame me, will you?" The current Nadia sat imposingly in the main seat. She watched as my mother and I bowed, a smug look flashing across her face. She made no move to ask us to rise. If Gabriel were still alive, she would have gotten up and helped my mother up personally. Evelyn was not accustomed to her arrogance, especially since she rarely even bowed to Gabriel. She stood up straight. "I heard this morning that the Patel family is going to be engaged to the Turner family and that the daughter of the Turner family will be the new mistress of the Patel family. Is that true?" "We didn't inform you beforehand. That was indeed Henry's doing. However, this young lady from the Turner family is Henry's destined Omega. Their compatibility is a perfect match." Nadia sighed. Under the guidance of the Moon Goddess, both Alphas and Omegas would meet their destined partner. They were drawn to each other, and upon meeting, would fall head over heels in love. No one could separate them. Unexpectedly, Scarlett was Henry Patel's destined Omega. Evelyn's expression softened. After all, no one could stop a pair of Alphas and Omegas with 100% compatibility from being together. Seeing Evelyn's expression soften, Nadia's eyes flashed. She immediately said, "I know that Ms. Baker has always liked Henry. How about this, I'll make the arrangements for Ms. Baker to come to the castle and be a concubine?"
