The night of Nova’s twenty-first birthday arrived quietly.
There was no grand celebration. Bloodmoon was not a pack that wasted time on loud ceremonies. Strength was acknowledged. Power was respected. That was enough.
A fire burned in the center of the courtyard. Warriors stood in a loose circle. The air carried the scent of smoke and pine. The moon was high and full above them.
Nova stood among them dressed in dark training clothes. Calm on the outside. Controlled as always.
Inside, something felt different.
Her wolf had been restless all day. Pacing beneath her skin. Awake in a way she had never felt before.
Ryder stepped forward.
The circle shifted instantly. Heads lowered slightly. Silence fell.
He wore black as usual. His presence is steady. His gaze moved over the gathered wolves before settling on Nova.
“Tonight,” he said, voice deep and even, “Nova comes of age.”
No cheering. Just quiet respect.
“You have served Bloodmoon with discipline and strength. From this night, you stand fully as one of us.”
One of us.
The words pressed against her chest.
Ryder stepped closer.
Tradition required the Alpha to acknowledge the wolf personally. A mark of trust. A scent exchange.
Nova stepped forward to meet him.
The fire crackled behind them. The pack watched.
Ryder reached out and placed his hand lightly on her shoulder.
The moment his skin touched hers, the world shifted.
It started with the scent.
His scent changed.
It grew stronger. Sharper. Richer. Like rain over dark earth. Like smoke and steel and something warm beneath it.
Her breath caught.
