The First Assignment

"The most dangerous games begin with ordinary conversations." The rain had stopped. Morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Blackwood Global, turning the polished marble floors into mirrors of gold and silver. Employees crossed the lobby with purpose, each carrying tablets, reports, or steaming cups of coffee. Emily Carter stood in front of the elevator, reviewing the schedule on her tablet. 8:00 a.m. — Executive Strategy Briefing. 10:30 a.m. — Market Analysis Presentation. 2:00 p.m. — Department Orientation. A busy first day. Just the way she preferred it. The elevator doors opened. As she stepped inside, three senior executives followed, their conversation stopping the moment they noticed her visitor badge. "You must be the new strategist," one of them said with a polite smile. Emily nodded. "I hope your first day wasn't too overwhelming." "It was... educational." The men chuckled before the elevator reached the executive floor. When the doors opened again, they stepped aside for her. Respect. Not because they knew her. Because Blackwood Global valued professionalism over titles. Emily appreciated that. Inside the Executive Strategy Division, the atmosphere was completely different from the lobby. No unnecessary conversations. No ringing phones. Every employee worked with quiet concentration. Rows of glass offices overlooked the city skyline, while digital screens displayed live market movements from around the world. Emily had barely reached her desk when a cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts. "You must be Emily!" She turned. A young woman with curly dark hair hurried toward her carrying two cups of coffee. "I'm Nora." "Research Analyst." "I figured today might be overwhelming, so..." She held out one of the cups. "Peace offering." Emily blinked. "You don't even know what coffee I like." Nora grinned. "I guessed." Emily accepted it. "If it's terrible..." "You'll still drink it because it's free." For the first time that morning... Emily laughed. A real laugh. Light. Unforced. Nora smiled to herself. Mission accomplished. Across the floor... Behind a wall of tinted glass... Damian Blackwood watched the interaction. Not because he was interested in office gossip. Because he noticed things. The way Emily listened before speaking. The way she thanked the receptionist. The way she treated everyone with equal respect. Most people tried to impress those above them. Emily seemed more interested in the people others overlooked. A soft knock interrupted his observation. Liam entered carrying several files. "Board meeting starts in fifteen minutes." Damian nodded. Then asked casually, "How's the new strategy team settling in?" Liam looked mildly surprised. "So we're pretending this question isn't about Emily Carter?" Damian raised an eyebrow. "I'm asking about the team." "Of course you are." Liam couldn't hide his grin. "They're settling in well." He paused. "Especially Emily." "She turned down a larger office." Damian looked up. "Why?" "Said she'd rather sit where she could hear people working." For reasons he couldn't explain... That answer stayed with him. Later that afternoon... Emily received her first assignment. She opened the sealed envelope on her desk. Prepare a complete financial risk assessment for the Orion Project. Deadline: Tomorrow morning. Her eyebrows rose. Tomorrow? Someone beside her whispered, "That's impossible." Emily looked up. "What is?" "The Orion Project." "It's one of the company's largest investment portfolios." "It normally takes weeks." Emily looked back at the file. Then smiled faintly. "Good." The employee stared. "Good?" "I don't enjoy easy work." Hours passed. The office gradually emptied. One by one, employees said goodnight and left. By seven o'clock... Only a handful of lights remained on. Emily was still working. Charts covered her desk. Financial reports. Risk analyses. International forecasts. She scribbled notes across a legal pad, occasionally pushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She didn't notice the office lights dim automatically into evening mode. Nor did she notice someone quietly approaching. "Still here?" She looked up. Damian. Holding two paper cups. "I thought everyone had gone home." "So did I." He placed one cup on her desk. "Tea." Emily looked surprised. "I didn't order anything." "No." "You looked like you forgot to." A brief silence settled between them. She glanced at the steaming cup. "You do this for all new employees?" "Only the ones working past dinner." She smiled. "I'll try not to make it a habit." "I hope you do." The words slipped out before he could stop them. For a second... Neither of them spoke. Then Damian cleared his throat. "The Orion Project isn't designed to test intelligence." Emily looked up. "It's designed to test pressure." "And?" "Don't let the deadline make you careless." With that... He turned and walked away. Emily watched him disappear into the corridor. For the first time... She wondered if everything she'd believed about Damian Blackwood was wrong. Not because she trusted him. But because he kept behaving like a man who didn't fit the image she had built in her mind. She looked down at the untouched cup of tea. It was still warm. Outside the office windows, the city lights flickered to life. Far below... A black sedan sat across the street. Its engine was off. Its windows were dark. Someone inside lowered a pair of binoculars. A quiet voice spoke into a phone. "Day two." A pause. "She's adapting faster than expected." The call ended. The car pulled silently into traffic and disappeared into the night. Emily never knew she had been watched. And Damian never knew someone was watching them both. End of Chapter 3
