Nora's POV
“I’m sorry for not informing you sooner. But I think you two will get along, so don't be worried, okay my sweet heart,” my mum replied softly, brushing her hands over my chin.
“How do you expect me to believe that, Mum? Are you trying to make my life a living hell or something? Because I seriously don’t think I’ll get along with him,” I replied, even though, deep down, I knew my stepbrother was incredibly attractive. And the last person I would love to spend time with, someone who makes my heart race for all the wrong reasons.
“Yeah, Nora, I know of your inner worries, of being uncomfortable, but rest assured, Derick had promised me that everything would be fine. But now, everything is up to you, make things positive and get along with him. Don’t worry—over time, you guys would be best of siblings. Besides, you will be going to college very soon, so you might make a lot of new friends. Don’t worry, I won’t restrict your freedom,” my mum assured, giving me a gentle smile.
I gasped, lowering my head, then suddenly lifted it again. And just then, my expression shifted, and my tone changed to a surprise one.
“Mum, wow.. I am stunned,” I paused a bit before continuing, “You didn’t tell me Derick would be this super rich,” I added, grabbing my mum's hands with excitement.
“Hehehe,” she laughed, smiling.
“Derick is such a sweet man. He doesn’t show off his wealth, as other men do. He’s caring and loving—and that’s one of the reasons I decided to marry him in the first place, his one of a type I had never seen,” my mum replied, exhaling air into her lungs, then let out a smiled, just as she wanted to throw more praise about derick, my voice cut in.
“Mum,” I called out, pausing my smile, my hands folded around my chest as I stared.
“You’re letting him get into your head again. You haven’t answered my question.”
“Oh, sorry, Nora, what's the question again,” my mum sneered, playing with hair, acting like she doesn't have a clue on what I had asked her earlier, or perhaps didn't hear what I had asked her.
“Ummm, It’s just that... I can’t get him out of my head,” she continued, her cheeks glowing a little, and that's when I got filled up.
“Okay, that’s it. Time for you to go. I need to set up my room and do the girl things Derick mentioned earlier,” I quickly came up with an excuse playfully toning it.
I gently pushed her out the door before closing and locking it behind her.
I let out a long sigh of relief, then collapsed onto my bed. I hadn’t expected this sudden, luxurious life. It was like stepping into a dream, a dream I had once hoped for to turn into reality and here it was, right in front of my eyes on a platter of gold.
Lying there, I stared up at the ceiling. But there was one thing I couldn’t get out of my head—him. Lucas. That guy was just so damn sexy—his chest, his eyes, his hair, his height. Every single thing about him screamed perfection and falling out to me, I felt my body curling and craving for his presence.
And after a long while of staring towards the ceiling, I eventually drifted off to sleep, with only one thought rolling back and forth inside my head.
The next morning, I woke up confused and disorganised, my hair scattered, and at some point it was as if I was wrestling inside a dream. For a moment, I thought I was still in Atlanta, in my old room, lying on my bed. But once I relaxed and looked around, I realized I wasn’t. I let out a soft chuckle. The air smelled fresh, and sunlight filtered into the room with a golden glow, creating a sweet captivating beauty and peace.
I stood from my bed, then walked over to the window, my hands placed on the concrete as I inhaled deeply into the soft air. The view was breathtaking. I never imagined I’d be living somewhere this luxurious.
Then, a soft knock sounded at my door, followed by a calm voice. “Ma’am, Mr. Derick has requested your presence in the dining room for a family dinner,” said a woman, her voice gentle. I could tell instantly it was one of the maids.
“Okay, thank you. I’ll be right there,” I replied, then turned back to admire the mansion’s beauty—the pool sparkling outside, and a small garden blooming to the side, adding a quiet charm to everything.
I changed into another outfit, then stepped out of my room. As I descended the stairs, my fingers trailed along the railing. Then, out of nowhere, I saw him.
Lucas.
He was leaning against the stair rail, right where my hand had just been. Startled, I flinched and paused mid-step.
He held an apple, casually twirling it in his fingers before taking a bite. His relaxed posture, and the way his chest was exposed from his shirt was breathtaken, adding with the way the morning light touched his features, casting his shadows, and making his hair glimmer more black, his skin was as if been placed on a morrow because it glows. Everything was effortless, intimidating, and maddeningly attractive.
I stared at Lucas for a moment too long before snapping myself out of it. I didn’t want to make anything obvious, so I continued down the steps. As always, he didn’t even glance at me. It was like I didn’t exist.
But just as I was about to pass him, he looked up—and our eyes met.
I froze.
For a split second, I felt completely lost in his gaze. The pressure was unbearable, so I forced myself to keep walking. But my foot landed wrong on the next step, and I slipped. At some point I felt like my life was flashing right in front of my eyes, because the steps were still counting and if am to fall from such a long distance to the ground, there's no guarantee I would be okay.
Before I could fall, someone caught me.
It was Lucas.
His hands held my waist firmly, and my hands landed squarely on his broad, muscular, sexily attractive chest. My fingers trembled slightly, and for a crazy second, I felt the urge run my hands softly on his chest, to feel it more.
Before I could say anything, his deep voice rumbled, “No need to thank me. Next time, watch your step—or you might lose a tooth.”
His voice echoed in my head, leaving behind a sensation I couldn’t shake—like an invisible pull dragging me toward something I wasn’t supposed to get attracted to.
He helped me up, setting me back on my feet, then turned and walked away. I stood frozen on the staircase, my heart pounding, my mind reeling.
The way I wanted to rub his chest… the urge to kiss him… it didn’t make sense. But I felt so badly to do it.
“He’s my stepbrother.”
“I can’t feel this way about him. It’s wrong. It’s forbidden.”
I wondered in thought.
I swallowed hard and descended the stairs more carefully this time. One fall was enough—and I doubted Lucas would come to my rescue again. And his words about me “losing a tooth” stuff, might actually come true.
After dinner with my mum and Derick, my stepdad, which was fun, and at which Lucas didn't join us. I didn't know why he didn't, but I think he was trying to avoid me or something.
I wandered out to the garden to get a closer look at it. Staring at it from my window was really nice and captivating, so I thought about going close to have a more perfect view.
Within a moment of checking the garden out, I sat in a more comfortable spot close to the garden. The flowers were blooming, the breeze was gentle, and the soft smell of the flower fragrance filled the air.
My mum joined me a few moments later, sitting beside me on the bench.
“So, how was your first night here? Hope you enjoyed it?” she asked.
I closed my eyes, then nodded. “Yeah, Mum. It’s nice. It’s the kind of perfect life I’ve always wanted. And aside from that, I can also see you whenever I want. Not like before, when you were always too busy at work and ended up coming home late.”
My mum then pushed her hands and held my palms softly, I shifted my gaze to her.
“Hehehe. You know back then, I had to. I had bills to pay and responsibilities to handle,” she replied with a warm smile.
I smiled back, understanding now what she meant. For the first time in a long while, it felt like we were finally in a place of peace.
