The man behind the paragraph

“Lena! Don't go upstairs!” Her mother's voice echoed through the house. Lena froze at the bottom of the staircase. Aria grabbed her hand. “Something isn't right.” “I know.” Above them, there was no movement. Lena looked toward the hallway. “Dad?” Nothing. Then a man's voice came from upstairs. “Lena…” Her father's voice. Again. “Come upstairs.” Aria tightened her grip. “That doesn't sound right.” Lena looked at her. “What do you mean?” “Your father doesn't sound like that.” “What?” “He sounds frightened.” Lena's eyes widened. She suddenly understood. The voice wasn't asking her to come upstairs. It was warning her. Her mother rushed through the front door. “Don't move!” Lena turned. “Mom, where's Dad?” Her mother didn't answer. Instead, she ran toward the staircase. “Wait!” A loud crash came from upstairs. Her mother stopped. Then another. Aria stepped backward. “Someone is in the house.” Lena's mother looked at them. “Get outside.” “But Dad—” “Your father is already outside.” Lena stared at her. “What?” Her mother pointed toward the back door. “He went outside before you woke up.” Lena's stomach dropped. “Then who is upstairs?” No one answered. Suddenly, the upstairs door slammed open. A man appeared at the top of the staircase. Lena couldn't see his face clearly. But she saw the silver bracelet around his wrist. The same bracelet from the photograph. Aria whispered, “Victor.” The man turned. Then he ran. Lena's father suddenly appeared behind him. “Don't let him get away!” The man disappeared through the hallway. Lena's father chased him. A few seconds later, they heard the back door slam. Then silence. Lena's mother grabbed her daughter. “Are you hurt?” “No.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” Lena pulled away. “Mom, stop protecting me and tell me the truth.” Her mother looked at her. “I am telling you the truth.” “No. You're telling me pieces.” Her mother's eyes filled with tears. “Because the whole truth could destroy this family.” Lena's voice softened. “It's already destroying us.” Aria stepped forward. “And it destroyed my family years ago.” Her mother looked at Aria. “I know.” “Then please.” Aria's voice cracked. “Tell me what happened to my sister.” Lena's mother closed her eyes. “She discovered something about Victor.” “What?” “Victor wasn't working alone.” Aria's expression changed. “Who was with him?” Her mother looked toward Lena's father. He answered. “People inside the foundation.” “The charity foundation?” “Yes.” Lena remembered the ledger. “The money.” Her father nodded. “Victor was using the foundation to move money. Your sister discovered it.” “And Daniel?” “He was involved,” her father said. Aria stared at him. “Involved how?” “He helped Victor move information.” Aria's face hardened. “Then Daniel really did betray her.” “Not exactly.” “Why does everyone keep saying that?” “Because Daniel was trying to get out.” Her father paused. “Your sister gave him a chance.” Aria looked confused. “What chance?” “She asked him to help her expose Victor.” “But he didn't.” “No.” “Why?” “Because he was afraid.” Aria laughed bitterly. “My sister trusted a coward.” Lena stepped beside her. “Aria…” “No.” Aria wiped her eyes. “I'm tired of everyone explaining why the people around her failed her.” She looked at Lena's parents. “She deserved better.” Lena's father lowered his head. “She did.” A strange silence followed. Then Lena remembered something. “The letter.” Everyone looked at her. “My sister's letter said she knew who opened the door.” Her mother went pale. “Yes.” Lena pulled out the photograph. “What does this mean?” Her mother looked at the words on the back. “I don't know.” “You're lying.” “No.” “You knew my mother opened the door.” Aria said quietly. “She did.” Lena looked at her. “What?” Aria pointed to the photograph. “Look at the handwriting.” Lena examined it. Then she froze. There was something beneath the sentence. A faint mark. A tiny crescent moon. She remembered the photograph from the box. “Trust the moon.” Her father looked closer. “That's not decoration.” “What is it?” “A symbol.” “Of what?” He didn't answer. Her mother did. “Your sister used it when she wanted to leave a message without writing words.” Aria stared at her. “Why didn't you tell me?” “Because I didn't know what she was trying to say.” Lena turned the photograph toward the light. The ink beneath the crescent began to become visible. There were numbers. Three. One. Seven. “317,” Lena whispered. Her father stared at them. “I know that number.” “Where?” He looked toward his wife. “It's the number of the account.” Lena's heart raced. “The account from the ledger?” “Yes.” Aria immediately took out her phone. “I still have the photograph of the ledger.” She opened it. They compared the numbers. It matched. But beneath the account number was another name. Lena leaned closer. Her eyes widened. “That's not Victor.” “No,” her father said. “Then who is it?” He didn't respond. Lena looked at her mother. Her mother was crying. “Mom?” Her mother finally whispered, “It's your grandfather.” Silence. Lena stared at her. “My grandfather?” “Your mother's father,” Aria said. Lena looked confused. “My grandfather died before I was born.” “Yes.” “Then how could he be involved?” Her mother shook her head. “He wasn't.” Lena looked at the account again. “Then why is his name there?” Her father slowly took the photograph. “Because somebody used his identity.” “Who?” Before anyone could answer, Lena's phone rang. Unknown number. She answered. “Hello?” A man's voice spoke. “Your family has been searching for the wrong person.” Lena's heart pounded. “Who are you?” “You want to know what happened to Aria's sister?” Aria moved closer. “Yes,” she whispered. The voice continued. “She wasn't killed.” Aria stopped breathing. “What?” “She escaped.” Lena's eyes widened. “Where is she?” The caller laughed softly. “Ask yourselves why she never came back.” The call ended. Aria stared at Lena. “My sister…” Her voice broke. “She could be alive.” Lena took her hand. “We'll find her.” Then another message appeared. This time, it wasn't from the unknown number. It was from Daniel. I need to see you both. Alone. A second message followed. Because I know where she went. Aria looked at Lena. For the first time in years, hope appeared in her eyes. But Lena couldn't shake the feeling that the message was exactly what someone wanted them to believe. Because beneath Daniel's message was one final text from the unknown number. Don't trust the man who brings you hope.
