THE HEARING ON WEDNESDAY morning lasts about fifteen minutes. Nate’s attorney Benjamin Harrison is a far cry from his public defender, but doesn’t have much to say in the end. He presents the court with a motion to dismiss the charges against Nathaniel Rodriguez on the basis of new evidence. The judge asks Angela if she has any objections, and of course she doesn’t. The judge grants the motion and, with a bang of his gavel, frees Nate. Sitting next to me is Gladys. I was surprised when I found her sitting in the courtroom. Knowing that Nate isn’t a killer is one thing. But he still has a lot to explain to Gladys. When the judge leaves the courtroom, Nate breaks into a grin and starts shaking Harrison’s hand.
