The palace was restless.
Whispers slithered down the corridors. Guards moved in tight formations. Servants carried lanterns long after midnight, searching every hall, every garden corner.
Prince Delvin walked calmly in the chaotic environment. Why is the palace so restless he asked himself.Yet none of it mattered right now—not the alliance, not the Diamond Staff, not even the king’s relentless demands.
He had to see Violet.
He found her in the far end of the palace gardens, where the moonlight spilled over the carved stone benches and roses breathed their perfume into the cool night. She sat alone beneath an arch of night-blooming flowers, her arms wrapped around herself, lost in thought
When she looked up and saw him, she rose instantly.
“Delvin—”
He reached her in three strides and pulled her into his arms before she could say another word. She melted against him, trembling. His hand slid into her hair, pressing her closer, as though making sure she was truly there.
“I've missed you so much ” he murmured against her temple.
“And I've missed you more,” she whispered. “I keep counting the days wondering when you would come back for me .”
Delvin drew back just enough to cup her face. “I'm here now .” he said
“And I won’t leave your side again,” he said sharply.
Her eyes softened with something that nearly undid him. “You can’t protect me from everything, Delvin.”
He brushed a thumb across her cheek, his voice low. “I can try.”
Their foreheads touched. The world around them blurred, softened—until all Delvin could feel was the warmth of her breath, the tremor in her hands, the impossible pull between them that had nearly destroyed him for weeks.
She looked up at him with eyes full of fear and longing.
“Delvin…” she whispered.
That was all it took.
His lips found hers—slow at first, searching, reverent—as though he feared she might disappear if he wasn’t careful. She curled into him, fingers gripping the front of his cloak, pulling him closer.
The kiss deepened, warm and desperate, everything they had held back crashing into the space between them.
He pressed her gently against the stone arch, his hands sliding to her waist. She shivered under his touch, her breath catching in soft, helpless sounds that sent fire through his veins.
“Violet,” he whispered against her lips, “I won't give up on you . I won't—”
“I know,” she breathed, kissing him again. “I know.”
The moonlight glowed across her skin as he trailed his lips along her jaw, her throat, her shoulder. She gasped and closed her eyes, her fingers threading through his hair.
He kissed her again—slower this time, deeper, more certain—as though every fear and every obstacle dissolved beneath the weight of what they felt.
Her hands cupped his face.
“Delvin… I love you.”
He froze for half a heartbeat. That simple confession hit him harder than any blade ever had.
Then he kissed her again—so fiercely, so tenderly, that her knees weakened beneath him.
“And I…” His voice cracked. “I love you more than anything I’ve ever fought for.”
The words broke something fragile inside both of them.
They sank onto the bench of cool marble, the garden’s shadows curling around them. He wrapped her in his cloak, drawing her close until no space remained between them.
There was nothing hurried about what followed—only warmth, whispered breaths, gentle touches, and the unmistakable certainty that they belonged to one another. His fingers traced the curve of her back, her shoulder, her cheek. Her lips moved softly beneath his, and she clung to him with a need as deep as his own.
Their intimacy was quiet but consuming, a shared surrender beneath the moon’s silver glow. They moved together with reverence and aching tenderness, breaths mingling, hearts racing, every moment woven with the unspoken fear that this might be the only night they ever had.
When it ended, Violet lay curled against his chest, listening to his heartbeat steady beneath her cheek. Delvin held her close, his fingers drawing lazy, absent circles along her arm.
Silence stretched, comfortable and full.
But reality returned like a blade.
Delvin exhaled shakily. “Violet… I have to tell you something.”
She stiffened slightly, lifting her head.
“It’s the king, isn’t it?”
“He gave me a choice.” Delvin swallowed hard. “Either I marry Elara… or I give him the Diamond Staff.”
Her eyes widened, horror blooming across her face.
“No… Delvin, you can’t give him that. If you lose the staff, you lose your throne—”
“I know,” he whispered.
“And if you marry her…” Her voice trembled. “You lose me.”
His jaw tightened, agony flickering across his expression. “I can’t do it, Violet. I can’t marry someone else. Not now. Not ever.”
She cupped his cheek. “Delvin… you’re a king now. You have a whole kingdom depending on you.”
“And you’re the woman I—”
She pressed a finger to his lips.
“Please. Don’t say it. It will only make it harder.”
Tears filled her eyes, shining like shattered glass.
“Your father’s dying wish,” she whispered. “He believed the alliance was Avernal’s only chance. He wanted this for you.”
Delvin’s chest ached. “My father didn’t know what he was asking of me.”
“He asked you to save your people,” Violet said softly. “And you can’t choose me over your kingdom. You can’t choose me over your throne.”
“I already did,” he whispered.
She shook her head, tears spilling. “No, Delvin. Don’t. Don’t make this harder on yourself.”
He brushed her tears away, voice hoarse. “You’re asking me to break my own heart.”
“I’m asking you to be the king your father raised you to be.”
He leaned his forehead against hers. “I can’t lose you.”
“You won’t,” she promised, though her voice shattered. “But you must marry Elara. For Avernal… for your father… for everyone who believes in you.”
He stared at her with the look of a man drowning.
She kissed his cheek gently. “I will be fine. I promise. You must do what is right.”
But Delvin could hear the lie in her voice.
He gathered her into his arms, holding her as though he could stop time itself if he tried hard enough.
“I don’t want to let you go,” he whispered.
“I know.”
“And I won’t,” he added fiercely. “No matter what decision I make… you will always be my only love ".
