Chapter Two

Nathan finally boarded the plane and located his seat after going through all the checkings and everything. He stopped right in his track when he saw her. 'At least God had answered his prayers', he thought smiling widely. Nathan had been praying not to have a boring companion, an old lady or an old man. 'God answers prayers', he muttered. He couldn't see her full view, just her side view and he was already getting excited. 'Calm down man', he told himself. He finally took his seat by her side. 'Hi', Nathan said giving the lady his most charming smile. 'Hi', she answered without even sparing him a glance. 'Pretty voice', he thought. Nathan wondered what business an English woman had in Nigeria. He brought out his phone and texted his mum. 'On my way already mum', he sent. The lady beside him had still not spared him a glance, she was just focused on the view outside. His chance finally came when the hostess brought them drink. 'Thanks', he said with a grin. She took a glass and muttered a thanks almost turning her gaze back to the window. She was so beautiful. 'What a doll', Nathan thought. Her cute oval shaped face, pink lips that were calling out to him to kiss them, her big hazel eyes, high cheek and her thick Chestnut brown hair which she pulled upward in a ponytail. 'Such a beauty', Nathan thought again thinking of a way to start a conversation, he knew if he didn't start a conversation now he wasn't going to get an opportunity anymore. 'I'm Nathan', he said giving her his boyish grin. She turned her gaze towards him giving him a long stare before nodding her head in reply. 'I wonder what business an English woman has in Nigeria', Nathan said smiling. Whatever business any woman from any part of the world would have, she answered. 'A bit rude', Nathan thought but still he gave her his boyish grin again. 'That was a compliment ma'am', Nathan said using his best accent. 'Seems more like poking your nose somewhere they don't belong', she replied taking a sip from her glass. Nathan smiled again, in the past he had been able to charm a woman with just his smile but felt they had no effect on this damsel here. 'Accept my apologies then', he said still smiling. The girl nodded and returned her gaze back to the window. This was going to be harder than Nathan thought. 'Your first time coming to Nigeria', Nathan tried again. She returned her gaze to him again and just stared. Nathan thought she wasn't going to reply until he heard her soft british voice that sent shivers to his body. 'Yes', she replied softly. 'Business, site seeing or vacation', he asked again trying to keep the conversation going. 'Believe me, that's none of your business', she answered coolly. Nathan smiled again he was surprised, he wasn't used to this kind of treatment from ladies, women usually seeked his attention. He wasn't drop dead handsome but he still got looks and he had a way with women, you could call him a sweet talker. He smiled again. 'My apologies again but I don't think you'll like it there'. 'And what do you think I like', the lady threw back at him. He gave her his most charming grin again before he replied, 'first the weather, its terribly hot there unlike England'. 'And why do you think I'll have a problem with it', she asked giving him a quizzing look. Before he could stop himself, he had it all out. 'I would say you're an over pampered English heiress who have had comfort and luxury all your life, I don't think you'll' ... 'Please hold your assumptions and your thoughts to yourself', the girl cut him short with an air of authority. 'Over pampered', she scoffed. 'Do I look like a 16 year old teenage girl to you', she asked in a really angry tone. Rose was in no mood for any sort of flirting right now, a lot was on her mind right now. For starters how was she going to tell her mum that her dad was getting married to her best friend who she had fallen out with the moment she found out the kind of insane relationship she was having with her dad, of all the men in the world what did she see in a divorced man, father of two kids who was on the wrong side of 50. She just needed love right now, the sort of love only family could give. She doubt she would get that from her mother but she needed a change of scene far from her dad and far from Rick, the jerk who just toyed with her feelings and left her broken, bitter and so empty. 'Gosh' , Rose muttered closing her eyes feeling the tears threatening to come. She won't cry again, she won't. Her professor had once said, 'if life give you lemons, squeeze them into people eyes but make sure you know the right people eyes to squeeze them. Funny, but she had laughed at the quote, thought it was ridiculous. The irony of life! Who would have thought that one day she would be in a plane; heartbroken, empty and she would think about the stupid quote she had always taken as a joke. 'Maybe she needed to start squeezing her lemons in the right people's eyes', Rose thought. She was done being a sucker, she won't play the fool anymore. No she won't. She sniffled fighting back the urge to cry again remembering she had bluntly refused to go with her mum when she was leaving, holding her ground that she was old enough to make her decision. Rick had been a major push to that decision and then her stupid love for that man she could not even call her father for what he had done, who the hell got married to their daughter's best friend. 'Why were men created, why not just women', Rose asked herself sniffling again. Nathan stole a glance at the lady beside him, was she okay? Not that he cared, he didn't even know her name. Immediately they landed, the lady disappeared. 'Well that's that, he shrugged swinging his hands and whistling. He was back home, he smiled thinking about his baby sister. 'She won't be looking like a baby anymore Nathan' he scolded himself. He had missed his family a lot. Man! was he glad he was back. 'Home sweet home Nathan, home sweet home', Nathan yelled smiling widely ignoring the stares he was getting.
