Pacing the length of the graveyard, I stared at my hands, puzzled. Why hadn’t I grabbed her and flown off? Her ferocity had anchored and snared me, and I felt compelled to return to her home. Rather than feeling cowed, I felt transcendent, like her power over me was at the same time empowering me. Shaking my head, told myself it was the effects of her vampire powers. Crickets sang, their calls setting me on edge. I should learn more about her, I thought, before destroying her. If I watched that home, I could follow her. Maybe I could woo her and gain a keepsake before dispatching her. I set off back towards the edge of town, eager to catch her at dawn.
