All I could do was wait. He had his phone on him, and I had mine, so if he got arrested maybe he could text or call. If he got injured maybe he could text or call. But if he killed himself falling, or if the competition skiers killed him in a rage, I wouldn’t know. Not sure how long to wait, not willing to follow Daniel down the groomed alpine slope, I stood where I was. Anxiety made time go painfully slowly. In the near silence I heard the gentle gurgle of a tiny stream nearby, and although usually I love the soft plop as pine branches release their pads of snow, I couldn’t enjoy it.
