Chapter 8
Jack had our luggage in the back of the Mercedes. Car had three suitcases; I had only two, because, as she explained, my clothes took up less space. We were ready to begin our adventure. Our Farewell Committee stood on the steps just outside the front door.
“Have a wonderful time, you two,” Bill told us.
“And don’t worry about the house. I’ll keep him from wrecking it.” Ethyl smiled.
Car gave them both a kiss. Bill gave me a hug. Ethyl gave me a kiss on the cheek.
Then Car turned to Susan and Judith.
“You know the drill and you have my cell phone number if you need me,” Car told them.
Susan laughed. “We won’t disturb you. Even if the house burns down, there’s nothing you can do from there. Have a wonderful time and don’t even think of us.”
Car looked around.
