Entire conversations were able to be followed by Catherine. Even the men found that they could often follow the meaning of the dialog.
Catherine learned that there were, despite her familiarity with the language, times where she lost the meaning of a conversation. This was not wholly unexpected and was related to the dialect of the specific region and local slang.
