The major pack assembly turned deadly quiet the second Astrid stepped forward and spoke the words no one expected.
Hundreds of wolves filled the great clearing under the open sky. Viktor stood tall on the raised stone platform, voice booming across the crowd. "We gather today to strengthen our future. I reaffirm my vow once more. Astrid is my adopted daughter. She will marry one of my sons, Kieran or Draven, and bring stability to this pack."
Murmurs rippled through the assembly. Astrid felt every eye on her as she walked up the steps. Her hands shook but her voice stayed clear and strong.
"I refuse," she said loud enough for all to hear. "I will not marry Kieran. I will not marry Draven."
Gasps broke out everywhere. Viktor turned fast. "Astrid, what are you saying? Think carefully before you speak."
She faced the pack, chin high. "I have heard enough. For years I believed in that vow. I fought for this family. But they treat me like a stray dog they picked up out of pity. I will not marry into a house that humiliates me every chance they get."
Kieran pushed through the crowd and jumped onto the platform. "You cannot be serious. After everything Father has done for you? This is madness in front of the whole pack."
Astrid looked him straight in the eyes. "I am serious. You told me yourself it was only duty. No love. Just an old promise you never wanted. I am done waiting for scraps from you or anyone else here."
Draven laughed from below the platform, voice carrying far. "This is rich. The stray has delusions of grandeur now. Refusing the heirs like she has better options. Pathetic. You really think you can walk away from us?"
The pack erupted in chaos. Voices shouted over each other. "She dares refuse the Alpha's sons?" one warrior yelled. "This is madness," another called out. Elders argued loudly while younger wolves whispered in shock and disbelief.
Viktor raised his hands for quiet. "Enough. Let her speak her piece. We will hear this out."
Astrid turned back to him. "I ask you, Alpha Viktor, to arrange a marriage alliance instead with the Lycan King. The ruthless one who rules the eastern territories. His strength could protect us better than empty vows inside these walls."
Silence fell for one heartbeat then exploded again. Wolves shouted in disbelief. "The Lycan King? She has lost her mind." "He is a monster with no mercy." "This will bring war, not peace to our borders."
Kieran grabbed her arm, face red with fury. "You humiliate me in front of the entire pack? After all the times I stood by you when others questioned? This is how you repay us and Father?"
"Repay you?" Astrid pulled away sharply. "You stood silent while your brother called me a stray. You chose Liora openly in front of me. Do not talk to me about repayment or loyalty."
Draven climbed up beside them, still laughing. "Delusions. Pure delusions. The Lycan King would eat you alive and spit out the bones. You think he wants a nobody like you? Dream on, little stray. This is the biggest mistake of your life."
"Quiet, Draven," Viktor snapped. He looked torn, eyes moving between Astrid and his sons. "This is not what I wanted at all. But the pack is fracturing right here in front of me. If this is your firm choice, Astrid, I will send the message to the Lycan King. We cannot have open rebellion in these dangerous times."
Kieran shouted, "Father, you cannot agree to this madness. She is throwing everything away for some foolish idea."
"I can and I will," Viktor said firmly. "To avoid worse fracture. The message goes out today. Now everyone calm down before this gets uglier than it already is."
The assembly broke into smaller arguments. Groups formed, some supporting Viktor, others calling Astrid crazy or brave. She stood on the platform feeling the weight of hundreds of stares pressing down.
One elder yelled up at her. "Girl, do you know what you ask? The Lycan King shows no mercy to anyone who crosses him."
"I know exactly what I ask," Astrid answered back. "Better a strong ruler than false family who never wanted me in the first place."
Draven shook his head with a sneer. "You will regret this. Mark my words. This is the end of you in this pack."
Kieran stood fuming beside his father, humiliation clear on his face. "This is not over, Astrid. You will see how big a mistake this is when reality hits."
Viktor placed a hand on her shoulder, voice low just for her. "I hope you know what you are doing. I will send the message but the consequences may be heavy for all of us. Think hard tonight."
Astrid nodded, heart pounding with a strange mix of terror and power. Her legs felt weak but her spirit lifted for the first time in weeks. She had done it. She had broken the chains in front of everyone who had doubted her.
As the crowd slowly dispersed, arguments still flying hot, she stepped down from the platform. Warriors gave her wide berth. Some looked impressed. Most looked angry or scared of what would come next.
Liora watched from the edge with a sharp smile but said nothing. Astrid ignored her and walked through the chaos she had created with her own words.
Inside she felt fear clawing at her chest. The Lycan King was known for his brutal ways and cold heart. What if he refused the alliance? What if he accepted and proved worse than everything she had endured here?
But another feeling burned brighter than the fear. Liberating power. She had taken control of her own fate. No more waiting for their approval. No more playing the grateful stray. She had spoken her truth and the entire pack shook because of it.
Viktor called after her as she left the clearing. "Astrid, we talk more tonight about this decision and what it means."
She kept walking, back straight. The message was sent. There was no going back now. And deep down she knew this bold move might save her or destroy her completely. Either way, it was her choice at last.
