Chapter 2: The Silver Shadow Arrives

The moment Liora Vale stepped into the hall everything shifted like the ground cracking under my feet. Her arrival hit the pack like a storm that afternoon. Messengers had brought word of trouble at our borders so the allied packs sent her as their voice. She rode in on a sleek black horse with silver bells in its mane. Her long silver hair caught the sunlight and her movements flowed like water. Tall and graceful with sharp green eyes that seemed to notice every detail. She carried mystery in her smile. The whole pack gathered fast to see her. By evening the welcome feast filled the great hall with torches blazing and tables loaded with roasted meat and dark wine. I sat near the head table smoothing my simple blue dress. The moonstone necklace from Viktor still rested warm on my skin. “Welcome Liora,” Viktor called out loud as she entered the hall. His voice carried power. “Silverfang thanks you for coming so quickly. Tell us about the threats you saw on the road.” Liora curtsied low then rose with a bright laugh. “Alpha Viktor it is an honor. The eastern borders stir with shadows. Rogues testing lines. But I bring more than warnings. I bring offers of stronger ties between our packs.” The room buzzed. She moved to the center and started sharing stories. Her voice pulled everyone in smooth and confident. Kieran stood up quick to offer her a drink. “Those rogues sound bold. How did you handle them on your journey?” Liora took the cup with a playful tilt of her head. “With speed and a few well placed arrows. One tried to block my path. I left him regretting it. But tell me Kieran what keeps the great Silverfang warriors sharp these days?” Kieran laughed loud and open. I had not heard that full easy sound from him in weeks. “Training hard and hoping allies like you keep things interesting. You ride like you were born in the saddle.” She smiled wide. “Flattery from the elder heir already? I might stay longer than planned.” They kept talking back and forth. Kieran leaned in closer his eyes locked on her. He asked about her pack’s fighting styles and she fired questions right back about our patrols. His laughter came again and again. Real and loud. It twisted something low in my stomach. Draven watched from across the table with sharp eyes. He finally spoke up. “Impressive skills for a diplomat. What else do you bring besides stories Liora?” She turned to him graceful as ever. “Clever questions Draven. I bring alliance proposals and fresh news from the north. But mostly I bring myself. Is that enough for now?” Draven’s lips curved in a small calculating smile. “We will see. You have our attention.” I waited for Kieran to glance my way. He always saved the seat beside him for me at these feasts. It had been our quiet tradition since I turned eighteen. But he stayed deep in talk with Liora. The chair next to him stayed empty. My chest tightened but I pushed the feeling down. Viktor noticed. He reached over and took my hand. “Astrid come sit here by me. Right where you belong.” I moved to his right side. The pack watched. Some smiled. Others gave side glances that felt heavier than usual. Viktor raised his cup high. “Before we eat let us honor one of our own. Astrid led a successful hunt three days back. Brought down a massive boar that fed half the pack. She moves quiet and strikes true. I could not be prouder of my daughter.” Cheers rose. I felt my face warm. “It was nothing special. Just doing my part.” “Nonsense,” Viktor said loud. He squeezed my shoulder. “You have heart and skill. The kind this pack needs. That hunt showed real courage. Pass the meat to her first. She earned it.” He kept talking close to me. “Remember that time you tracked the deer through the fog last winter? No one else could have done it. You make me glad every day that you dragged me home all those years ago.” I smiled at him. “You remind me often enough.” “Because it matters,” he said firm. “You are family. Blood or not. And that vow I made stands strong. One of my sons will be lucky to have you.” His words wrapped around me warm but I still felt eyes on us. Whispers floated from the lower tables. I caught a few looks from older wolves. They glanced between me and Liora then back to Kieran. Across the table Kieran and Liora kept going. “You should show me the training grounds tomorrow,” Liora said with a spark in her eye. “I want to see if Silverfang lives up to its name.” Kieran grinned. “Challenge accepted. I will personally give you the tour. Maybe we spar a round.” “I would like that,” she replied. “Though I warn you I do not go easy.” Draven cut in. “Careful brother. She might surprise you.” They all laughed together. The sound carried across the hall. I picked at my food and forced another smile when Viktor asked if I wanted more wine. “Everything alright Astrid?” Viktor said low just to me. I nodded quick. “Yes. She seems… capable. Good for the alliance.” He patted my hand. “Exactly. We need strong friends now. But do not forget your place here. You are cherished.” The feast rolled on fast. More stories from Liora. More questions from the brothers. Kieran barely looked my way the whole night. Every time his laugh rang out I felt a small sting sharper than the last. Later as the torches burned lower people started leaving. I slipped out into the cool night air to clear my head. The moon hung full and bright. I walked the familiar stone path toward the guest quarters. The same path Kieran and I had taken many nights after feasts. Talking about dreams and the future. Laughing under the stars. Voices drifted ahead. I slowed down. Kieran and Liora walked side by side. Her silver hair glowed in the moonlight. His hand rested light on her back guiding her. “This way,” he said. “Your quarters are quiet and secure. You will like the view of the forest.” “Thank you Kieran,” Liora answered soft. “You have been very welcoming. Warmer than I expected from such a strong heir.” He chuckled. “You make it easy. Your stories tonight had the whole hall hooked. Stay as long as you need. We can talk more tomorrow during that training session.” “I look forward to it,” she said. “And to learning more about you.” They stopped near the door. I stayed hidden in the shadows watching. The same path. The same moonlight. But now it was her beside him. Not me. My stomach dropped. I turned away fast and headed back toward the main house. The unease I had brushed off earlier crept back stronger. It was nothing I told myself. Just a guest. Just one night. Kieran would remember our traditions soon enough. But as I climbed the steps to my room the image of them together stuck in my mind. The way he laughed with her. The way he forgot the seat. The side glances from the pack. I touched the moonstone necklace and took a deep breath. Viktor had my back. That was what mattered. Tomorrow would be better. Still the small voice in my head whispered otherwise. Something had started tonight. And I was not sure I liked where it headed.
