Public Fracture

The full moon ceremony turned into the night my heart got ripped open in front of the entire pack. Torches flickered all around the big clearing. The bright silver moon hung heavy overhead like it watched everything. Wolves from our pack and a few visitors stood in loose circles talking low and waiting for the rituals to strengthen our alliances with the Goddess. Liora moved through the crowd like she owned every shadow and every smile. Her long silver hair flowed loose down her back and her dress caught the firelight with every step making the fabric shimmer soft and dangerous. She looked perfect. Untouchable. When the drums started beating deep and steady she stepped right into the center of the open space. Her body twisted graceful and powerful. Every spin sent her hair flying. Every leap looked effortless. The whole pack could not look away. Kieran stood close by with Draven. I heard him speak first. “Look at her go. She dances like a true warrior. Have you ever seen moves like that?” Draven nodded fast. “Better than anyone here. She fits right in like she was born for this pack. What do you think brother?” Kieran kept his eyes locked on her. “She is incredible. The way she moves shows real strength. We need more of that energy around here.” I stood only a few steps away trying hard to focus on the rhythm of the drums but my stomach twisted tight. My hands felt cold. The pack clapped loud and long when Liora finished her dance. Cheers rang out from every side. “Amazing Liora,” Kieran called out as she walked back toward us breathing a little fast. “You lit up the whole clearing. Truly.” Liora smiled at him with that bright easy look. “Thank you Kieran. I wanted to show respect to Silverfang. Did you like it? Be honest.” “More than liked it,” Kieran answered quick his voice warm. “You have real talent. We should dance together next time. I would not want to miss a chance like that.” Draven laughed beside him. “Brother you are already planning ahead. Liora teach me that last spin sometime. I need to learn from the best.” She touched Draven’s arm lightly her fingers resting there a second. “Anytime Draven. You both make me feel so welcome here. It means a lot coming from the heirs.” They kept talking close. Kieran asked her more questions about the dance steps. She answered with laughs and small jokes that made both brothers grin wider. I tried to say something nice. “That was beautiful Liora. You honored the Goddess well.” She glanced my way quick. “Thank you Astrid. Nice of you to say.” But her attention went right back to Kieran. I felt invisible standing there. The moonstone necklace Viktor gave me pressed cool against my skin like a reminder of better days. The announcement segment came next. Viktor stepped onto the raised stone platform and raised his hands for quiet. I stood near him with my heart beating so fast I thought everyone could hear it. The moonstone necklace felt heavier than ever tonight. “Tonight we celebrate alliances,” Viktor said strong and clear. “But we also remember promises kept. Astrid my adopted daughter saved my life years ago with courage most wolves never show. She is family through and through. I reaffirm my vow here under the full moon. She will marry one of my sons Kieran or Draven when the time is right. This stands firm.” He expected cheers. Instead a heavy awkward silence fell over the whole pack. A few wolves shifted on their feet and looked away. My face burned hot. Kieran stepped forward onto the platform beside his father. “Father thank you for the kind thought. We all respect what Astrid did back then. She showed bravery. But the pack needs stronger alliances right now. Blood ties and fresh strength matter more than old promises. Someone like Liora could bring real power and new blood to our line.” Gasps spread through the crowd. I froze completely on the spot unable to move. Draven joined his brother right away. “Exactly. Charity cases have their place but blood purity keeps a pack strong and respected. We cannot ignore what is best for Silverfang. Liora has proven herself already with her skills and her connections.” Murmurs broke out everywhere. Some wolves nodded toward the brothers. One older warrior said loud enough for me to hear “The heirs speak truth about alliances. We need fresh strength.” Another elder countered from nearby “Viktor loves her like his own daughter. The vow should hold.” Voices rose and mixed in small arguments all around the clearing. Humiliation burned through me hot and deep. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole right there. My hands shook at my sides. Viktor slammed his fist hard on the stone platform. “Enough of this. My word is law in this pack. Astrid stays under my full protection and the vow holds. Anyone who questions it answers to me directly. Come here girl.” He pulled me protectively to his side. His arm stayed firm and strong around my shoulders like a shield. “This discussion ends now. Enjoy the rest of the ceremony and remember who leads here.” The night dragged on slow after that. Whispers followed me every step I took. Small groups stopped talking when I passed. I slipped away as soon as the main rituals ended and found a quiet spot behind the old oak trees at the edge of the clearing. Tears came fast once I was alone. I leaned against the rough bark and let them fall hot down my cheeks. Footsteps approached through the grass. Kieran appeared in the moonlight. For one foolish second hope sparked in my chest but his face stayed hard and closed off. “Astrid we need to talk.” I wiped my eyes quick and straightened up. “Kieran please. That was humiliating out there. You and Draven sided against me in front of the entire pack. How could you do that?” He crossed his arms tight over his chest. “Stop making this difficult Astrid. Father is embarrassing us all with this constant favoritism. The pack sees it clear as day. You need to understand your real place here.” “My place?” I said my voice shaking bad. “Your father promised me to one of you years ago. We have real history together. I love you Kieran. Does none of that mean anything to you anymore?” Kieran sighed cold and looked past me into the trees. “It is late. Go get some rest. We can not keep doing this.” He turned and left me there crying harder than before. His footsteps faded fast into the night. The next morning I walked the quiet forest path near the guest quarters trying to clear my aching head. Birds sang overhead but my chest felt completely empty. Voices drifted from behind a thick cluster of trees up ahead. I moved closer without thinking drawn by the sound. Liora stood wrapped tight in Kieran’s arms. They kissed deep and hungry right there in the open. Her hands gripped his shirt pulling him closer. His fingers tangled in her silver hair holding her face to his. I stopped dead in my tracks. Fresh pain sliced through me like a blade. Liora spotted me over his shoulder. She pulled back slow and deliberate then smirked with satisfaction clear on her face. “What about Astrid Kieran? Does she know how you really feel?” Kieran turned and saw me standing there. His face showed no shame at all. “Astrid? She cannot do without me. Always following me around obsessed with that old promise from Father. But I am not going to marry her. Never was. Father can say what he wants but Liora is the future. She brings real strength.” Liora laughed soft and low. She pulled him back in close. “Good answer. Now where were we?” She kissed him deeper this time. Their bodies pressed tight together right in front of me. The sounds of it burned into my memory. I watched for one horrible frozen second then turned and ran. Tears blinded me completely as I crashed through the low branches. They scratched my arms and face but I did not stop. Sobs tore out of my throat raw and loud. Kieran had torn everything apart with his words. The man I loved badmouthed me like I was some silly girl chasing him. Liora smirked like she had won the ultimate game. I reached the main house breathing hard and slammed my door shut behind me. The ceremonial dagger Viktor gave me lay on my table shining in the morning light. I picked it up with shaking hands and held it tight. The pain in my chest mixed with something sharper and hotter now. Real anger started to build underneath the hurt. Viktor would hear about this soon. But right now I just sat on the edge of my bed and cried alone wondering how everything I believed in had fallen apart so fast and so completely.
