Shattered Illusions

The morning sun had barely risen when Astrid stormed into Alpha Viktor's private study, her fists clenched so tight her nails bit into her palms. "Viktor, I cannot stay silent anymore," she said, voice cracking with raw anger. "Last night I saw Kieran kissing Liora. Right there in the trees like I meant nothing. And after the ceremony where they both tore me apart in front of everyone." Viktor looked up from his maps, his face hardening instantly. "What did you just say?" "I saw them," Astrid repeated, stepping closer. "Kieran had his hands in her hair. She smirked at me over his shoulder and asked if I knew how he really felt. He called me obsessed. A silly girl chasing an old promise. He said he was never going to marry me." Viktor's chair scraped back as he stood. "That fool. Both of them. I will have their heads for this disrespect." "Please listen," Astrid said quickly. "The public rejection already broke something in me. But seeing him choose her so openly after everything we shared? It feels like a knife in my back. You keep pushing this vow and it is only making them hate me more." Viktor paced the room, his heavy boots thudding against the wooden floor. "I am furious with them, Astrid. Kieran knows better. Draven too. But I will not break my word. You saved my life. You are my daughter in every way that matters. I will call them in right now and remind them where their duty lies." "Do not," Astrid said, shaking her head. "It will only make things worse. The pack already whispers. They see you shielding me and it turns them against me." "Let them whisper," Viktor growled. "My protection stands. The vow stands. I will enforce it more forcefully if I must. Tonight at dinner I will make it clear again. One of my sons will honor this promise or face my wrath." Astrid rubbed her temples. "You say that, but every time you defend me they pull away harder. I feel the walls closing in." "You are stronger than this," Viktor said firmly. "Go prove your worth today. Take a scouting run if you need to clear your head. But know this. I have your back. Always." Astrid left the study with her chest tight. Servants and warriors glanced at her in the halls, their voices dropping to murmurs as she passed. By the time she reached the training grounds the gossip had already spread. "Did you hear what the heirs said at the ceremony?" one warrior muttered to another. "Old Alpha's playing favorites again," the other replied. "Bad for the pack." Astrid ignored them and grabbed her gear. She needed to move, to do something real. Within the hour she slipped out of the main gates alone, heading toward the dangerous eastern ridges where rogues had been spotted before. No backup. No one to hold her back. The forest closed around her fast. Branches whipped at her arms as she ran low and silent. Her breath came steady while her mind raced. Every step pushed the pain deeper into fuel. She climbed rocky outcrops and crossed cold streams, eyes scanning for any sign of trouble. Hours later she crouched behind thick bushes near the border. Voices drifted on the wind. Three rogue scouts argued in low tones about weak points in Silverfang's patrols. Astrid memorized their positions, counted their weapons, and slipped away without a sound. She had what she needed. By late afternoon she burst back through the pack gates, sweat soaked and determined. A small crowd gathered as she reported directly to the border guards. "Three rogues planning a raid two miles from the old watchtower," she said clearly. "They talked about hitting at dawn. We can set a trap if we move now." Murmurs of approval rose from the warriors around her. For a moment it felt good. She had done something valuable on her own. Kieran appeared from the armory, Liora close at his side. His face stayed cool as he listened to her report. "Good work, Astrid," he said flatly. "But we already had some idea of movement in that area." Liora smiled sweetly. "Yes. I shared similar insights from my own scouts yesterday. Kieran and I went over the maps this morning. Your find confirms what we suspected." Kieran nodded. "Exactly. Liora's perspective has been sharp. She sees patterns we might have missed. Still, thanks for confirming it, Astrid." Astrid stared at him. "I went out there alone and brought back exact numbers and positions. This is solid." "Of course," Kieran said with a small shrug. "But the real credit goes to strong alliances. Liora has been invaluable." Liora touched his arm lightly. "We make a good team. Do not you think so?" The small crowd shifted uncomfortably. A few nodded toward Liora while others avoided Astrid's eyes. The brief pride she felt drained away fast. Later that evening Astrid sat alone near the edge of the training fields trying to steady her thoughts. Viktor's words echoed in her head but they brought no comfort now. His forceful protection only fed the fire of resentment around her. She questioned for the first time if this pack truly wanted her here or if she had been fooling herself all along. As shadows lengthened she walked toward the guest quarters to clear her head. Low voices stopped her near a cluster of trees. She froze and listened. Draven's tone came sharp and low. "You are pushing too hard, Liora. The old man still clings to his vow like a fool." Liora's laugh was soft but edged. "Let him. It serves us for now. The more he protects her the more the pack turns. Soon they will demand change themselves." "And what about the borders?" Draven asked. "Those rogues are getting bolder." "Exactly as planned," Liora replied. "A little pressure here, a distraction there. When the time is right everything falls into place. Just keep your brother focused on me." Draven chuckled darkly. "That part is easy. He is already half gone for you." Astrid pressed her back against the tree trunk, heart pounding. The words hung in the air like smoke, hinting at games far bigger than simple romance. She slipped away quietly before they could spot her, mind spinning with new doubts and dangerous possibilities. The pack that once felt like home now seemed full of hidden blades. And Astrid was starting to wonder how much longer she could bleed for it.
