Dawn broke cold and gray as Astrid packed the last of her things and prepared to leave the only home she had known for six years.
She stood in her small room, folding a worn cloak with steady hands. Outside the window the pack grounds already stirred with quiet talk of her departure. The air smelled of pine and distant smoke from the morning fires.
Viktor entered without knocking, his face heavy with regret. "Astrid, wait. Please. I need to speak before you go."
She turned to him. "What more is there to say, Viktor?"
He closed the door and spoke low. "I thought protecting you was love. I thought the vow would keep you safe and give you a place. Instead my favoritism made targets of you. It pushed my sons away. It let the poison grow right under my roof. I am sorry. Truly sorry for the harm my love caused."
Astrid met his eyes. "You meant well. I know that. But meaning well does not erase the pain. Your protection became a cage. It made me weaker in their eyes and stronger only when I had no choice."
Viktor nodded slowly. "You are right. I failed as Alpha and as a father. Will you ever forgive me for what my choices did to you?"
"I already have," she said. "But forgiveness does not mean I stay. I have to build something of my own now. Something no one can take away with a few words or a change of heart."
A knock interrupted them. Kieran stepped inside, looking rough and sleepless. "Astrid. Give me one minute. Just one. Please."
Viktor glanced between them and left quietly. Kieran shut the door and faced her.
"I was weak," he said fast. "I let Liora turn my head. I let Draven poison the air. I stood silent when they humiliated you because I was scared of losing status and power. I am begging you. Forgive me. Stay. We can fix this together."
Astrid looked at him with cold eyes. "You called me a stray. You kissed her while I watched. You stood on that platform and rejected me in front of the whole pack. Your weakness cost lives and nearly cost me mine. Forgiveness is not something you get by asking hard enough."
Kieran stepped closer. "I loved you once. In my own way. I was just too much of a coward to choose it over ambition and what others expected of me."
"Then you never loved me at all," Astrid replied. "Love does not stand by and watch someone bleed. You weaponized my loyalty against me. I will not give you the satisfaction of my tears or my return. Goodbye, Kieran."
He reached for her hand but she pulled away. "Please. Do not leave like this. Let me make it right."
"I am already gone," she said. "The girl who waited for you died the night of the full moon ceremony. There is nothing left to save between us."
Outside in the courtyard the pack gathered to watch the departure. Guards brought Liora forward under escort. Viktor raised his voice for all to hear.
"Liora Vale is banished from Silverfang lands. She plotted with traitors and fed our enemies. Leave now and never return. If you are seen here again the sentence is death."
Liora spat on the ground. "You will all fall without my help. This pack is already broken. Enjoy your new queen, Astrid. She will learn the hard way that power always demands a price."
Astrid faced her. "You played your games and lost. Leave. The guards will make sure you reach the border. Do not look back."
Liora was led away in silence after that. No one spoke in her defense. The crowd parted without a word of protest.
Darius waited near the horses, his presence filling the space. He watched Astrid approach with those sharp dark eyes.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Almost," she answered. "Just one more thing."
They stood alone for a moment while the horses stamped and the morning wind moved through the trees. Darius spoke first.
"I have my own reasons for accepting this alliance. You should know that. I am not a soft man. My court is hard. My enemies are many. I need a queen who can stand beside me without breaking. You showed me that strength when you exposed the rot here."
Astrid studied his scarred face. "I sense you have a hidden agenda. Something bigger than a simple marriage. Tell me if I am wrong."
He did not deny it. "I do. But my honor is not simple either. I will not lie to you or use you as a pawn. You will know my plans when the time is right. Until then I offer respect and a place of power. That is more than this pack ever gave you."
"I believe you," she said. "For now. But I will watch. I will not be anyone's tool again. I have learned that lesson the hard way."
Darius gave a short nod of approval. "Good. That is exactly the spirit I want. We leave within the hour. My men are ready and the road is clear."
Astrid walked to the main gates one last time. Viktor stood there with a small group of loyal warriors. He said nothing more. Words had already been spent between them.
Kieran watched from a distance, face empty. He did not try to stop her again. His silence said enough.
Astrid mounted the horse Darius had brought for her. She looked back once at the familiar roofs and training fields and the forest that had been her world. Her gaze was steely and clear. No tears. No hesitation. Only the quiet strength of someone who had chosen her own path.
"Ride," Darius ordered.
The horses moved out. Behind them Silverfang grew smaller with every step. Ahead the road stretched unknown and full of danger. Astrid did not look back again. The home that had raised her and broken her was gone. Her new path had begun.
