Rita was missing for almost a week before her disappearance was finally mentioned in the media. Details were sparse—insufficient to grab any attention.
Cory requested Rita’s office manager to create and distribute flyers throughout Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, La Jolla, and Encinitas—the local beach cafés and shop windows.
The flyer entitled “MISSING” showed an enlarged photo of “Rita Rivers, sponsor of the upcoming fun run benefit.” She instructed the agreeable manager to include the phone number of the department of missing persons on the flyer.
Kitty had become a guest in Cory’s house and adjusted well to the change. Both guest and host were happy with the arrangement. Kitty hid under Cory’s bed whenever she heard a knock on the door, but would crawl out when called.
