– 25 – When Cory opened her front door, she spied her cell phone on the table. In her haste to leave with Joe, she had forgotten to disconnect it from the charger. Ben’s upsetting letter had distracted her. She vowed to be more alert. A glance at the phone showed no messages. Kitty, craving attention, ran to her current keeper. Cory cuddled her, stroked her soft white fur while Kitty purred her response. Rita had adopted Kitty as a kitten from an animal rescue center and provided her with fresh fish in season and the finest cat food and toys, and an abundance of affection. Cory hoped Rita was safe and unhurt and would realize that Kitty had good care, despite the absence of fresh fish. Kitty sniffed at and promptly rejected canned tuna. She would rather walk away hungry than compromise
