A week had literally past without spending any time with Heath. Not even five minutes just for a casual chat, in one way I did feel like he was avoiding me, but mother was home pretty well whenever Heath was. The only thing stopping me from thinking I made our whole relationship up was the few sneaky looks and caresses he initiated when she was not looking. Texts everyday, I was almost concerned mum would go through his messages due to the paranoid ramblings she kept on about when Heath was not around.
She kept saying that she thought Heath was cheating with some lady at work. No doubt the very same lady that she had attacked that night when they went out. Unsure what to think, I did not dare ask Heath about it, especially not in a text.
Half the time when coming home so late, Heath did not even bother eating or going to bed, He simply fell asleep on the lounge waking up again and leaving before I even left my room in the morning. It was good in one sense as I knew he was not with mother, but I could not even get a word into him. Not once did he come to my door or try and enter, nor did he try to meet outside of the home.
Opening the front door after the chime, it was the first time I had seen Lathen since outside the house that morning. We had talked and texted, but that was it. It turned out he had more issues with his family then I had known about, not to mention the fact that he had dropped out of school. Though from what I had pried out of him, he left after a relationship with the lecturer went wrong. His arms banding around me instantly, I heard heels clacking along the hallway before mother made her presence known behind me.
Lathen’s eyes heading upwards, “Maria, you look amazing. It has been too long.” A faint air of disappointment flashing in her eyes and across her face, it was no doubt at the fact that it was not Heath. Mustering a fake smile, she flicked her hair back over her shoulder revealing her perfectly flawless skin.
“Oh you’re back so soon Lathen, I thought it would be a more few years. And you’re as sweet as ever, come in. In fact, why don’t you both go to Alice’s bedroom, I need to talk to my partner when he comes home which should be home any second now.” Turning his head to look at me, Lathen flashed a sly smile walking in confidently. Pulling me along, he and I dared not say a word until my door was firmly closed behind us.
Pulling me close for a moment, I could feel the sincerity in his warm embrace. We had been talking and texting, he knew pretty well everything. Even if I did not say it, he knew it hurt. Relationships, especially forbidden ones were the most painful. His voice low as to not be overheard, “how are you holding up?” I had not cried for the past week, I had stayed strong and kept telling myself to trust in Heath. He said he would make this work, and now I needed to believe that. Though in honestly Lathen’s simple question had my heart clenching hard in my chest.
“Mm… I really don’t know. Mum’s been acting strange lately.” My voice moving to a whisper, “she almost seems obsessed with Heath. She has turned up to his work a few times now, and is constantly talking about that woman. I really don’t know what has gotten into her, she was never like this with a man before.” Nodding his head, Lathen agreed as we kept talking and whispering. Though he still seemed distant like there was a few things he was holding back.
“I… I umm did not come earlier because I moved out of home yesterday, I got myself an apartment. After mum found out about my lecturer and I… she umm… well she did not take it very well.” Hearing the raw emotion in his voice, I could feel my eyes straining at his pain. Leaning back in for a hug I scrunched my fingers in his shirt pulling him closer to comfort him. Something wet sliding down my neck, I knew it was tears. Being such an outgoing and strong person, I hand not seen Lathen cry since primary school.
“Have you heard from him?” Keeping my voice soft, I flattened my hand against his back as he shook his head. I did not know the whole story, but from what I could tell… he really loved this man. Just stay like that, Lathen’s body encompassed my own shaking softly as we stayed connected in silence.
A knock sounding at my door, Heath’s voice seeped through. “Alice it’s dinner time.”
“Kay… we will be there in a minute.” My voice sounding loudly, this was the only kind of conversation I had managed to verbally have with Heath all week. The doorknob suddenly turning, I peered around Lathen to see Heath standing in my doorway with a curious expression. Lathen turning slowly, I finally saw his face red and puffy as tears still escaped his glassy eyes.
Lathen wiping his face into the sleeve of his jumper. “I err… got to get going away. I’ll text you my new address. Come see me?” Lathen’s hand reaching back out he softly gripped my upper arm drawing me in to place a kiss to my head before walking toward the door. Heath stiffening, I would talk to him later. Surely, he would understand.
“Are you sure you don’t want to stay?” Not responding with words, Lathen shook his head as he turned his face with a half-smile slipping out the edge of the door avoiding Heath.
Heath’s body heaving up and down, his gaze zeroed in on me as he turned watching after Lathen. Moving into my room, I could not help but step back as Heath moved closer with intent. I just did not know what kind. His face so close to my own, I felt his hands find my wrists pinning them into the wardrobe behind me that was stopping my escape. “That was the same boy from the other morning.”
“Heath are you ready for tea… where did you go?” My gaze shifting to my door, my mothers voice was close by as the sound of her heel clacked heavily against the floor.
