We climbed back up, and Nikolai held my hand even tighter as we got into a car that was headed straight for our hotel. The ride was silent, and I just sat there, my eyes filling on their own. Even after I left home, even after I took an entire vacation, how could she still be here? How come she shows up everywhere to ruin everything for me? How come she is always there to break me after doing that every day for nineteen years of my life? I turned to Nikolai. He was a little more relaxed, his eyes closed, but I could see the veins that popped up on his head, the stiff way he was sitting, and the way he held my hand like I was the only thing that was keeping him sane.
