WHEN WE ARRIVED at the house, Philip went straight to the kitchen to see if Mrs. Goodman needed any assistance. I told Mr. Goodman that people would be arriving in groups of three or four, and the two boys and I settled down to wait. When all of our guests had assembled, I sent the kids to the dining room to eat. Then I invited the adults up to the study and offered them something to drink. When they were settled, glasses in hand, I took the floor.
