Chapter 20 Atlanta, GACharles Atlanta, GACharles SUNDAY EVENING PHILIP and I took Steve and Roger to an organ concert at St. Philip’s Cathedral. The performer was a young man from Jacksonville named Tom Foster, and we’d heard great things about his playing from friends in that city. The boys hadn’t been terribly excited about going with us, so I watched their reactions carefully from time to time during the performance, noting with satisfaction that they seemed to be deeply engrossed in the music. We took them to a dessert restaurant afterward and talked about the performance over our sweets. Philip said, “Steve, which piece did you like best?” “Gee, Uncle Philip,” he said, “I liked it all, but I guess my favorite would have to be the ‘Variations on America’.” “Good choice,” I said.
