The Offer She Didn’t Expect

913 Words
Bella stared at the card in her hand long after the man had disappeared. The name printed on it was simple. Ethan Cole. Below it was an address. And a company name she didn’t recognize. Her fingers tightened slightly around the card. “Call me if you need a job…” His words echoed in her mind. Bella hesitated. Was this real? Or just another disappointment waiting to happen? She looked down at her stomach. Then sighed softly. “I don’t have the luxury to hesitate,” she murmured. ⸻ The Next Morning Bella stood in front of a tall glass building, her heart beating fast. She checked the address again. It matched. The company logo gleamed under the sunlight. It wasn’t as massive as the Knight Group… But it was still impressive. Bella took a deep breath. “You can do this,” she whispered. Then she walked inside. ⸻ Inside the Company The receptionist looked up as Bella approached. “Good morning,” Bella said politely. “I’m here to see Mr. Ethan Cole.” The receptionist’s expression changed slightly. “Do you have an appointment?” Bella hesitated for a second, then held out the card. “He asked me to come.” The receptionist glanced at it— And immediately sat up straighter. “Please wait a moment.” Bella blinked in surprise. That reaction… It wasn’t normal. ⸻ Something Isn’t Right A few minutes later, Bella was led upstairs. Not to a waiting room. Not to an office. But to the top floor. Her steps slowed. “This… doesn’t look like a normal interview,” she thought. When the elevator doors opened, she was greeted by a quiet, luxurious hallway. Before she could process it— A familiar voice spoke. “You came.” Bella turned. And there he was. Ethan Cole. Standing calmly, as if he had been expecting her all along. ⸻ Not Just an Ordinary Man “You…” Bella said softly. Ethan stepped closer, his expression unreadable. “I was wondering if you would show up,” he said. Bella frowned slightly. “You didn’t seem surprised when I came yesterday,” she said. “And now this…” Her eyes scanned the floor. “This entire place… it belongs to you, doesn’t it?” Ethan didn’t deny it. “Yes.” Bella’s eyes widened slightly. So he wasn’t just a kind stranger. He was powerful. Very powerful. “Why didn’t you say anything?” she asked. Ethan shrugged lightly. “Would it have changed anything?” Bella paused. Then shook her head slowly. “No…” “Exactly,” he said. ⸻ The Offer Ethan gestured toward his office. “Come in.” Bella followed him inside. The room was spacious, elegant, and quiet. Everything about it screamed control. Ethan walked behind his desk and sat down. Then he looked at her directly. “I’ll be straightforward,” he said. Bella nodded, her heart starting to race. “I don’t offer help without a reason.” Her fingers curled slightly. “I figured…” Ethan leaned back. “I need someone.” Bella blinked. “For what?” “A personal assistant,” he replied calmly. Her eyes widened. “A… personal assistant?” Ethan nodded. “You’re educated. You carry yourself well. And more importantly…” he paused slightly, studying her, “you don’t look like someone who breaks easily.” Bella felt something shift inside her. No one had said something like that to her before. Not after everything that happened. “But…” she hesitated, “you don’t even know me.” “I know enough,” he said. Silence filled the room. Bella looked down at her hands. This opportunity… It could change everything. But— “There must be conditions,” she said carefully. Ethan smiled slightly. “You’re smart.” He leaned forward. “There are.” ⸻ The Condition Bella’s heart began to pound. “What is it?” Ethan’s gaze didn’t leave hers. “You work only for me,” he said. “No distractions. No divided attention.” Bella frowned slightly. “That’s normal for a job…” “That’s not all,” he added. Her breath caught. “You don’t ask questions about my personal life,” he continued. “And you don’t interfere in my business decisions.” Bella hesitated. It sounded… strict. But not impossible. “And in return?” she asked. Ethan’s voice remained calm. “I’ll make sure you never have to worry about money again.” Bella’s eyes widened slightly. “And your child,” he added quietly, glancing at her stomach, “will be well taken care of.” Her breath hitched. He knew. Of course he knew. This man… Was far more observant than she thought. ⸻ A Decision Bella stood there in silence. This was more than a job. It was a turning point. A new life. A way out. She slowly lifted her head. “When do I start?” she asked. Ethan’s lips curved slightly. “Immediately.” ⸻ A New Beginning As Bella walked out of the office later that day, her heart felt different. Still wounded. Still heavy. But no longer hopeless. She had taken the first step. And she wouldn’t stop. Not until she became strong enough… To stand in front of Alexander Knight again— Not as the woman he abandoned. But as someone he could never reach again.
