Chapter 4 The Medical Exam

1094 Words
Sara rubbed her hands together, scheming internally. ‘If the Hoover family finds out I did my actions on purpose, they’ll think I’m a horrible person! They’d definitely be embarrassed to let me stay here and would kick me out.‘ ’Then I can go back to my dad and play the sympathy card. Getting that million-dollar allowance back would be a piece of cake! Perfect plan!' Frank Hoover noticed the subtle twitch in his lips as he suppressed a laugh. If Sara truly understood Charles, she wouldn’t be optimistic. “Fine, let’s do it!” Sara shot to her feet, wiping away imaginary tears as she grabbed Frank’s arm, looking utterly pitiful. “Frank, you have to stand up for me and prove my innocence!” Frank, already well-acquainted with her inner thoughts, calmly pulled his arm away and instructed Mr. Smith to prepare the car. Soon, they arrived at the hospital. Frank led Sara into an office, with Joanna trailing behind them, a sly glint flashing in her eyes. Joanna was brimming with confidence. She couldn't wait for Frank to finally see Sara’s true colors. Frank pushed the door open, and the doctor inside, recognizing him, looked both surprised and intrigued. His surprise grew when he noticed Sara trailing behind Frank. Dr. Bennett had known Frank for years and never seen him with a woman. Yet here she was, looking as though she might collapse at any moment. Sara clutched her stomach, leaning against the wall, her face contorted in mock agony. “Ah! It hurts so much! Ms. Lane, we’ve never had any conflict. Why are you trying to harm me?” Behind her, Joanna clenched her fists. She couldn’t suppress a smug grin at the thought of Sara soon falling out of Frank’s favor. "Go ahead, keep pretending, Sara Gunn. Dr. Bennett is one of the leading experts in his field. Let’s see how you talk your way out of this after the medical exam!" However, Sara ignored her completely, her heart brimming with excitement. 'Perfect! My little scheme is about to be exposed. I’m thrilled! I'm so excited!' Frank watched her, a peculiar feeling rising within him. Why did Sara really want him to despise her that badly? Frank felt confused. “Check her thoroughly,” Frank instructed Dr. Bennett, his voice calm but firm. “Let me know if there are any injuries. I’ll cover the medical expenses.” Dr. Bennett gave Sara a quick glance and immediately felt something was off. She didn’t look injured. She looked suspiciously at ease, as though there was something between her and Frank. Even more puzzling, Dr. Bennett noticed the faint smile in Frank’s eyes as he looked at Sara. When had Frank ever looked at anyone with such softness in his eyes, especially a woman? Frank pulled Dr. Bennett aside, whispering something in his ear before they returned to the room. Sara glanced between the two men, sensing that something wasn’t right. 'What’s going on here?' Before she could figure it out, Frank led her to the examination room. After the check-up, Dr. Bennett returned to his office holding a thick stack of papers, covered in incomprehensible medical jargon and scribbles. Joanna couldn’t wait any longer. “Dr. Bennett, tell us the results! What’s wrong with her?” Dr. Bennett frowned slightly, annoyed at being addressed so casually by someone younger. He handed the report to Frank, his expression neutral. “Here is your fiancée's examination report. Take a look.” The word "fiancée" made Joanna’s face darken with displeasure. 'I'm supposed to be Frank's fiancée!' She stormed forward, her voice sharp. “Frank, look at the results! I didn’t lay a finger on her. This proves Sara’s true colors!” Frank’s expression grew cold. Without a word, he flung the stack of papers at Joanna. “See for yourself,” he said flatly. Confused, Joanna quickly flipped through the pages, only to find them filled with random scribbles and indecipherable notes. Dr. Bennett smirked, knowing full well those were doodles from the psychiatric department next door. Joanna wouldn’t be able to make sense of them. Finally, she reached the last page, where a few bolded words stated that Sara had multiple bruises and swelling. Joanna froze, her face paling. “That’s impossible. I didn’t hit her! I didn’t do it!” Meanwhile, Sara sat in blissful ignorance of the drama unfolding around her. She was busy daydreaming about her plan succeeding and her impending freedom from the Hoover family. A few minutes later, Joanna, seemingly overwhelmed, grabbed the nearest trash can and, without warning, tried to dump its contents onto Sara’s head. Before Sara could react, a strong hand pulled her out of the way. It was Frank. His sudden, forceful movement brought Sara crashing against his chest. The impact made her nose sting slightly as she found herself enveloped in his arms. Frank’s deep voice rumbled above her, steady but tinged with concern. “Are you okay?” Sara blinked, momentarily flustered. She felt his breath graze the nape of her neck, leaving a tickling sensation that made her heart race. “I’m fine,” she stammered, her cheeks flushing. 'What’s with my heartbeat? Stop it!' she thought, her cheeks flushing with warmth. She quickly pushed away from Frank, turning her back to him as she tried to compose herself. 'This is the first time I’ve ever been held by a man! Sure, he was trying to help, but why do I feel something unusual?' 'No! Why am I blushing? I’m the one who’s supposed to make people swoon, not the other way around!' Determined to regain her composure, Sara turned back around, though the faint blush on her cheeks betrayed her effort. Frank caught her flustered inner thoughts and couldn’t suppress a soft laugh, covering his mouth with his hand. Sara was unexpectedly endearing, Frank realized. Sara frowned, noticing his amusement. 'What’s he laughing at? Do I look that ridiculous right now?' Her thoughts raced as realization struck. 'Wait. Could he have figured out I’m embarrassed? No, absolutely not! That can’t happen!' Frank’s quiet laughter continued. He had always heard her spoiled, haughty inner voice, but this vulnerable side of her was new and surprisingly charming. An unfamiliar warmth stirred in Frank’s chest. 'What was happening?' Frank felt his ears grow hot as he tried to shake off the feeling. Covering his ears momentarily to cool them down, he finally released a quiet sigh. He was actually letting Sara affect him. He must be losing his mind.
