Chapter 5

Later that afternoon, we gathered in the back garden, the sun casting a warm, golden hue over the scene. We sat around a rustic wooden table, plates of fresh fruit, sandwiches, and cold drinks in front of us. Miriam was animatedly telling a story, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Neil was chuckling at her jokes, while Nathan listened quietly, a smile formed on his face. I was just taking a sip of my lemonade when my phone buzzed softly in my pocket. I glanced at the screen and saw Addie’s name flashing. My stomach tightened slightly—Addie was my closest friend, and I knew she only called when something was urgent. Excusing myself politely, I pushed back my chair and stepped away from the table, walking toward a quiet corner of the garden. I answered the call, trying to keep my tone light. “Hey, Addie. What’s up?” There was a pause on the other end before she spoke, her voice tense. “Hey… I just got some new details about your work leave. I thought you should know… your parents dropped by the hospital earlier. They looked worried, asking for any updates or information. I didn’t tell them anything, of course, but…” My heart skipped a beat. I clenched my jaw, my mind racing. My parents weren’t supposed to know the full extent of what was happening at work—at least, not yet. Their visit now added a layer of complication I hadn’t anticipated. “Thanks for letting me know,” I managed, trying to keep my voice steady. “Did they say anything else?” Addie hesitated. “Just that they’re concerned… and they want to see you. I didn’t tell them much, but I thought you should be aware. Be careful, okay?” “Thanks, Addie. I’ll handle it,” I replied, a bit more tense now. I ended the call and took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her words settle in my chest. Returning to the table, I forced a smile and sat down beside Miriam, Neil, and Nathan. They looked at me with curiosity, but I quickly masked my concern, pushing it aside for now. They don’t know anything about me and I would like to remain that way. As I picked up my glass again, I realized that the day’s lessons in trust, balance, and patience were extending beyond horseback riding. There was a lot more riding on this than I’d initially thought—secrets, family worries, and the delicate dance of keeping everything together. I looked over at Nathan, who seemed to sense something was off but didn’t bother asking because,, honestly speaking, we are not that close yet. For now, I’d enjoy the peaceful garden, but I knew I couldn’t ignore the storm brewing just beneath the surface. As I sat there, sipping my drink and listening to Miriam’s lively chatter, my mind drifted into a quiet, reflective space. These people—Nathan, Miriam, Neil—had entered my life so unexpectedly, yet somehow, they had become a soothing presence I hadn’t realized I desperately needed. Nathan showing up unexpectedly without any announcement made me feel safe, even though we barely knew each other. He has these vibes that give you a signal to trust him even though you don’t know him personally. It all made me feel lighter, more at ease. Miriam’s infectious energy and carefree spirit brought a burst of brightness into my day. Her laughter, the way she could find joy in the simplest things—it was a reminder that life didn’t always have to be so complicated or heavy. Being around her made me realize how much I’d been craving genuine fun, the kind that makes your soul feel alive, even if just for a moment. Neil’s easygoing nature, his gentle kindness added another layer of comfort. He was the kind of person who listened without judgment, making it easy to let go of worries for a while. With them, I could breathe easy, forget the weight of secrets and responsibilities, and just be myself. In those few days, I’d somehow stumbled into a different world—one filled with calmness, quietness, and the unexpected. It was a stark contrast to the chaotic, guarded life I’d known before. Meeting these new people, sharing this experience, had unlocked a part of me I’d buried deep—one that longed for peace, for genuine connection, for laughter that wasn’t tinged with stress or fear. I realized that maybe, just maybe, I didn’t have to carry everything alone. That in their presence, I could find a moment of respite—a brief escape from the constant pressure, from the secrets I was holding onto so tightly. As I looked over at Nathan, I felt a gentle warmth in my chest. Despite everything—the worries, the hidden truths, the uncertainty—I was beginning to see that maybe life still held moments of happiness, still had room for quiet joy and simple fun. And perhaps, with these new people, I could start to find my way back to it. ----- I was walking towards the backyard when I noticed Nathan standing at the far end of the backyard, behind a cluster of bushes. His posture was so straight, almost automatic, like he was trying to disappear into the shadows. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but the murmur of his voice floated through the air, low and urgent. I caught a few words—disjointed, hurried, coated in secrecy. “No one can know where I am,” he whispered, the words nearly lost in the breeze. “Everything will be alright… I just need you to keep them distracted for now.” A cold shiver ran down my spine. Who was he talking to? Why was he hiding? The tone of his voice, the way he kept glancing around as if he feared being watched—is this related to his car accident? That is it why he didn’t want to call the authorities. My heart pounded silently in my chest. I tried to focus on the words, but they blurred into a confusing jumble. Still, the sense of something hidden, something dangerous beneath the calm surface, grew stronger. He paused for a moment, then continued in a softer, yet just as strained voice. “Trust me, I’ll handle it. Nothing’s going to blow up. Just… keep it quiet for now.” I instinctively took a step closer, pretending to be engrossed in the flowers nearby, but my mind raced. Why was Nathan keeping secrets? Who was he speaking with? And what exactly was he trying to hide? A part of me wanted to confront him, to ask what was going on. But another, more cautious voice warned me to stay silent—for now. Whatever this was, it was bigger than I understood, and I didn’t want to jeopardize the fragile calm I’d just begun to find. As Nathan ended his call and turned back toward the house. I quickly looked away, pretending I hadn’t seen or heard anything. My mind replayed his words: “No one can know where I am,” and “Everything will be alright.” They echoed in my head, casting a shadow over the peaceful afternoon, leaving me with more questions than answers. ----- Over the next few days, I found myself more at ease around Nathan. His quiet presence became a comforting anchor in the chaos of everything happening around us. We started talking more—about small things at first, then deeper topics, about fears, hopes, and secrets we hadn’t shared with anyone else. I was beginning to think Nathan might be a business executive or an elite, because there are a lot of things he knows that a normal individual. There was a strange ease between us now, a growing trust that neither of us quite wanted to admit out loud. Nathan's calm demeanor seemed to melt away some of my guarded walls, and I, in turn, felt myself opening up more, laughing at his dry humor, sharing my thoughts without the fear of judgment. One afternoon, Nathan suggested we run some errands—just a quick trip to the nearby supermarket, about an hour away. “We need some supplies,” he said softly, “nothing urgent, just essentials.” I nodded, feeling a strange flutter in my chest—part curiosity, part anticipation. We arrived together, the store bustling with shoppers. Nathan kept close by, but he had to leave for a while since he was looking for something, while I wandered off to grab a few things, feeling a rare sense of independence and freedom. The supermarket was busy, the fluorescent lights flickering softly overhead, and I was lost in the mundane task of picking out items. Suddenly, I felt a strange presence—an unsettling sensation I couldn’t shake. A group of men had gathered nearby, their eyes lingering on me a little too long. I tried to ignore it, but their whispers and smirks grew more noticeable. One of them stepped closer, making lewd comments, their words sharp and invasive. “Excuse me,” I uttered, as I tried to walk past them, but they just chuckled at me. When I tried to walk the other way they also blocked me. “We just want to get to know you, Miss?” One person said, waiting for me to respond. As if I was going to entertain them. I remained quiet and was just standing there. The tension in the air thickened, and I instinctively froze, unsure of what to do. Before I could react, I saw Nathan emerge from the aisle, his face tense, eyes blazing with a fierce intensity I’d never seen before. His stance was commanding, with a protective energy that made my heart race. The men’s smirks faded into wary glances as Nathan's voice cut through the chaos. “Back off,” he said sharply, voice low but unwavering. “Leave her alone.” The men hesitated, sizing him up, but Nathan stepped forward, his posture dominant. His eyes never left theirs, a quiet warning that he wouldn’t tolerate any disrespect. The air crackled with tension, but Nathan's unwavering stance made it clear he was willing to fight if necessary. I stood there, breathless, watching him. Just who on earth was this man? His protective instinct, his commanding aura—it was unlike anything I’d ever seen. I felt a mix of awe and confusion, questioning just how much I really knew about Nathan. But then again, I knew really nothing about him. We met by accident and probably will stay at that. As the men finally backed off, muttering under their breath, Nathan turned to me, his expression softening just a little. “Are you alright?” he asked gently, reaching out to steady me. I nodded, still worried but grateful. In that moment, I realized Nathan was more than just the calm stranger I’d met. He was a protector—someone who would stand his ground for me, no matter what. And as I looked into his eyes, I wondered just who the hell Nathan really was beneath that composed exterior. Whatever secrets he carried, I sensed one thing was certain: I wasn’t going to forget this side of him anytime soon.
