Chapter 2

1592 Words
I had to call Miriam and Neil for help. I couldn’t carry the man all alone. Neil had a hard time, also moving the man towards the guest room. “What happened?” Miriam worriedly asked. I took a deep breath before speaking up. “I found him on the side of the road,” I uttered before proceeding to check on his body. Miriam then suggested calling for some help, but I declined. This man, right in front of me, specifically said not to involve the police by calling someone for help, meaning they would eventually call the police. There’s just something about this man. “Miriam, can you please get my duffle bag in the car, the red one?” I uttered, and she nodded at me before proceeding to get it. Thank god his wounds are not severe, but he still has to get some CT scan and X-ray for me to check if his bones sustained any injuries at all. “Where do you think he came from?” Neil uttered. I just shrugged. I took a leave from the hospital and the big city to rest from all of this. Turns out I’ll just be doing it yet again. Neil was the one to clean the ‘man’s’ body. We would alternate throughout the day and night, checking on him. I was starting to get worried if he suffered some major head trauma because he was just sleeping, but then again, when your body is tired, it needs to rebuild those nutrients and energy. Whereas the car he got into an accident with, Neil was able to make it start, and he moved it into the garage. We tried looking for some identification from the ca,r but found nothing, just a broken phone that refused to start up and an empty wallet. I was starting to think this guy might have run away from his home, but then again, we would never know. I was quietly having breakfast in the nook when my phone rang. It was Addie. ‘How have you been?’ ‘Fine, kinda enjoying this quietness.’ Addie laughed. ‘I knew you would.’ ‘How’s everything there?’ Addie took a deep breath. ‘That bad, huh?’ I asked. ‘What else did you expect? There've been emergency cases morning, day and night.’ ‘I know you could handle those.’ ‘You think? I’m starting to lose my s**t in here.’ I laughed at her response. ‘Ooo, and there’s this news that some Billionaire Conglomerate is missing. Some of the men checked this hospital thinking he’s here.’ I nodded. ‘Did they find him?’ ‘Nah.’ Addie replied before ending the call. Before taking a bath, I head towards the guest room to check on our unconscious patient. He was still there with his eyes closed. I took the seat right beside the bed and stared at him. “Maybe I should start reading some books to you,” I uttered. Sometimes those kinds of things help. I fixed the blanket before standing up and was about to leave the room when he spoke. “Just kill me,” He uttered. My forehead creased upon hearing those words. I checked his vitals; everything seemed fine. He uttered those words? Why on earth? Then it hit me, a car accident. Someone must be trying to kill him. That is why he requested not to alert the authorities, because he knows they will eventually find him. But then this is all just speculation. I can’t possibly be sure about it until he’s the one to tell me about it. I continued to stare at his face. “Who are you really?” I uttered before finally leaving the guest room. ----- The next morning, I told Miriam I'd be jogging in the area. She nodded at me and told me she'd be the one to check on the guy from time to time. I just nodded in agreement. It took me around 2 hours to reach the minimum number of steps I was aiming for. I went straight to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water. When ‘a shirtless guy’ went out, I yelled in shock. “Oh my god!” I uttered before closing both of my eyes and opening it again. He stared at me. “You’re finally awake?” I asked before taking a sip from the water bottle. I was feeling uncomfortable when he was just staring at me, watching my every movement, and adding to the fact that he’s f*****g shirtless. I mean, I have seen a dozen guys shirtless already since I worked in the hospital, but this one is different. “Do you mind wearing a shirt?” I asked. I watched him go back to the guest room and come back now wearing a shirt. I cleared my throat once again. “Sooooo. Care to share your name?” I asked because he was just staring at me and saying nothing at all. “How are you feeling?” “Thank you for saving me,” He said. I just smiled at him. “Uhm. I honestly don’t know how to start a conversation with you.” I explained why on earth I am feeling extremely nervous with him. I was about to speak again when I spoke. “Do you have a phone? Can I borrow it for a while? I’ll just call someone?” He said. I nodded immediately. “Sure, sure, hang out. I’ll get it from my room,” I replied before proceeding upstairs, got the phone, and went back to hand it to him. He excused himself at the same time Miriam came in. She smiled at me, “What time did he regain consciousness?” I asked. Miriam continued to walk towards the sink. “I think around 3 o'clock, after you left for your morning jog.” “Did he mention something or anything?” I asked curiously. Miriam shook his head. “Just that he’s thankful for saving him and that he values our time and effort for taking care of him for the past few days.” “That’s good,” I replied. From the glass window of the kitchen, I can see him talking on the phone, even using his hands to express his emotions. He must be very frustrated as I can see his forehead creasing. I decided to cook brunch while waiting for him to finish using my phone, so I made eggs and fried rice. “Hi.” I greeted him once again. He placed the phone on the kitchen island. “Thank you for letting me use your phone. I highly appreciate it,” He said. I nodded. “Let’s talk over brunch,” I said, then went to the dining table. We both quietly sat down at the dining table, and I smiled at him. “I’m Anna.” I introduced myself. “Nathan,” he replied shortly. I nodded at him and pressed both of my lips together. “So I guess, everything is in order?” I asked. “We took care of you for the past few days here in the house because you kinda said not to call the authorities,” I added. He remained silent. I thought to myself, maybe he didn’t want to talk about it, but then again, it’s also not my business. “I’m fine if you don’t want to talk about it, but I highly suggest you go to the city to have your CT-scan and x-ray to rule out any possibilities for bone injury,” I explained. “Just to be sure.” Nathan still remained quiet and was just staring at me. It was starting to make me uncomfortable. “Uhm, do you contact someone to come and fetch?” I asked. “Because your car is pretty wrecked. I don’t think it’s possible to use it anymore.” Nathan cleared his throat. “No. I haven’t contacted someone yet to come and fetch me,” He explained. My forehead creased. What does he mean he has yet to contact someone? I just literally saw him talking to someone using my phone. “Uhmm. Okay,” I replied, unsure. I was quietly thinking if it'd be okay for me to ask him what his plan was. I mean, literally, he’s been here for a week already. For almost a minute, we both remained quiet until Nathan finally spoke. “I am very thankful to you for taking care of me,” He said. “I owe you my life, and thank you for not calling the authorities.” I nodded at him. “You know,” I uttered. “During one night, you unconsciously uttered ‘Just kill me’.” Nathan nodded like he wasn’t fazed by the fact of what I just said. “Are you a doctor?” He asked. I nodded. “I figured, because you wouldn’t be confident in taking care of me without any medical background.” I pressed my lips together. I was about to speak up again when he asked a question that I couldn’t immediately answer. “Will it be alright if I stayed here until I figure everything out?” He asked as if we had known each other for years, and the tone he was using was not asking; he was informing me. I didn’t know what to say.
