Chapter 14 Where Home No Longer Feels Simple

1194 Words
The crossing back was quiet. No grand gates. No sudden shift. Just a moment where the air changed— and the world tilted. The forest deepened. The wind grew heavier. And the path beneath Amara’s feet… felt like it remembered her. Auren walked ahead, relaxed, like he belonged to every shadow and every breath of wind around them. Amara followed. She should have felt relief. And she did. But it didn’t settle the way she expected. Something stayed restless. The mark pulsed. Stronger here. She pressed her hand against it. Auren glanced back. “Still bothering you?” “It’s louder,” she said quietly. He frowned slightly. “That’s not a good sign.” Amara didn’t ask why. Because she already knew. 🌿 The kingdom welcomed her. Not loudly. Not with celebration. But with recognition. The trees shifted as she passed. The wind curled gently around her shoulders. Home. And yet— She kept thinking of the river. Of a voice she didn’t want to remember. Of eyes that had looked at her like she mattered. Amara closed her eyes briefly. No. She had made her choice. 🌿 Her parents arrived before she reached the inner grounds. Silawán stood tall, composed, his presence steady as ever. Amihan—softer, but no less powerful—closed the distance first. “Amara.” The word carried relief. And something else. Concern. Amara stepped into her embrace. “I’m fine,” she said. Amihan pulled back just enough to look at her. “No,” she said gently. “You’re not.” Silawán’s gaze had already dropped to her arm. “The mark,” he said. Amara lowered her hand slowly. “It doesn’t hurt all the time.” “That’s not reassuring,” he replied. Auren stepped forward. “It’s not ordinary,” he said. “I felt something in the in-between. Something watching.” Silawán’s expression darkened. “We expected as much.” Amara stilled. “You expected this?” Amihan sighed softly. “We feared it,” she said. Silence. Amara exhaled. “I didn’t come back to be watched again.” Silawán’s voice remained calm. “You came back to be protected.” “That’s not the same thing.” For a moment— No one spoke. Then— Amihan reached for her hand. “We won’t force you into anything,” she said. “But we have to think ahead now.” Amara frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” Silawán exchanged a brief glance with Amihan. Then— “There’s been an invitation,” he said. Amara’s chest tightened faintly. “From the Dalaketnon court.” That word again. Heavy. Deliberate. “Their young king is seeking a wife,” Amihan added. Amara blinked once. Then let out a short breath. “You can’t be serious.” Silawán’s tone didn’t change. “We are.” Amara shook her head. “You want me to compete for someone’s attention?” “No,” Amihan said quickly. “That’s not what we’re asking.” “Then what are you asking?” Amara pressed. Silawán stepped closer. “To go,” he said. “To be present. To understand who he is.” Amara stared at him. “And why would I do that?” Silawán’s gaze sharpened slightly. “Because his power may be the only thing strong enough to stand against what has marked you.” That landed. But it didn’t convince her. “So I go there,” she said slowly. “stand in a room full of women hoping to be chosen—” “You didn’t have to be chosen,” Amihan interrupted gently. “You don’t have to choose him either.” “Then what’s the point?” Amihan’s voice softened. “To build an alliance,” she said. “To be seen. To be protected.” Amara looked away. This again. Different place. Same feeling. Silawán added: “Liraya will be there.” That made her pause. “She knows our world,” he continued. “She can guide you.” Amara let out a slow breath. Guide. Or watch. Or report. She didn’t say it. But she thought it. “So I leave one world where I’m watched,” Amara said, “and walk into another where I’m… evaluated?” Silawán didn’t flinch. “You walk into a place where you won’t stand alone.” “That’s not the same thing.” Amihan stepped closer then, softer—like wind before rain. “No,” she said gently. “But it might be the only thing that keeps you safe right now.” 🌿 Days passed. Not quickly. Not slowly. Just enough for thoughts to settle where she didn’t want them. The wind curled around her shoulders— familiar, gentle. But it wasn’t the same. Because it didn’t feel like the way his hand had— warm, steady, like it had chosen her without hesitation. Amara exhaled slowly. She shouldn’t remember that. And yet— she did. Lucian’s voice. Lucian’s silence. The way he didn’t follow her. The way she didn’t turn back. The mark pulsed again. This time— When she thought of him. Amara stilled. No. She pushed the thought away. 🌿 Mireya arrived at dusk. Amara didn’t expect her— But she wasn’t surprised either. “You really left,” Mireya said, stepping into the clearing. Amara let out a small breath. “You followed.” Mireya smiled faintly. “I wasn’t going to let you walk into another world alone.” Amara stepped closer. “I didn’t think you’d come here.” Mireya shrugged lightly. “I go where I need to.” A pause. Then she glanced toward where Auren stood in the distance. Her expression shifted. Subtle. “You trust him,” Mireya said. “I do,” Amara replied. Mireya nodded once. “He’s easy to trust.” Something in her tone lingered. Amara studied her. “You don’t.” Mireya let out a quiet breath. “I used to,” she said. Amara waited. Mireya’s gaze stayed on Auren. “He’s always been like that,” she continued. “Easy. Charming. Never staying long enough for anything to matter.” A pause. “But I stayed,” she added softly. Amara’s chest tightened slightly. “And he didn’t.” Mireya smiled faintly. “Not in the way I wanted.” Silence settled between them. Then— Mireya looked back at her. “So,” she said lightly, “we’re going to the Dalaketnon court.” Amara groaned softly. “I don’t want to.” “I know,” Mireya said. “But you’re going anyway.” Amara sighed. “Apparently.” 🌿 The path ahead shifted again. Different now. Not home. Not human. Something else. Auren stepped forward. “Once we cross this,” he said, “there’s no turning back the same way.” Amara nodded. She didn’t look behind her. Because she already knew— If she did— She might hesitate. And she didn’t want to. Not anymore. The mark pulsed. Stronger. Closer. And somewhere beyond— A different world waited. Darker. Watching.
